Moral of story: even buying private treaty does'nt guarantee you quality cows!

Very true. Your odds are better but you can still get ripped off - unless you know and trust the seller.

As I stated earlier, my opinion of pen hookers is not up there with the Pope or anything. It just makes sense to me that if they buy them from you in the parking lot, they are going to make money someway, some how inside the sale barn, or another one later on down the road, and of course this would be your loss. So I am NOT a fan..

The pen hooker that got mine had a very good relationship that was obvious to me with the folks running the sale barn.

Wow! Never heard of a pen hooker before. Course, I'm a rookie. Dam good information though. I'll have to watch out for this. I don't think the owner of our local salebarn would tolerate that though. This should be posted in the Beginners Board for those that are just starting out.

Thanks

Some of the pen hookers in our area are the biggest customers of the sale barns. Neighbor use to always sell his stuff to the penhookers instead of waiting in line, his wife got upset with him about it and went to the sale with him next time to prevent it from happening. Penhooker made him an offer on a cull cow and they refused and she sold for less than he offered.

We have a good local cattle trader in our area that will came to your farm and buy, or haul yours for you but will not buy in the yard lot. Said he feels if you went to the trouble to get them there you should sell them there. Wish they were all like him because he sells some quality stuff from buying out whole herds and is honest about his stuff. He has taught me a lot.
