After seeing the post with the "sharpening wheel". I wonder if there is a " home built" remedy for shelling Pecans? Those Texas natives are good but a real pain to bring to fruition .....

Yea if I win the lotto or we have a really hard freeze this year I'll make something like that. ;)

I truly hate cracking them my friend gave me a grocery bag full... that was a PITA cracking them. I make a pie that has pecans and for 4 cuts I think the package was it was 12 bucks.. When did pecans start having a touch of platinum and gold in them. I grew up we bought ones out of a can and it was like 59 cents. I was like man if only I could get 12 bucks a lb for some 5 wt steers.

Protein is a finite resource on this planet and for every pound produced there are dozens if not hundreds of middle men getting a piece of the action. I will gladly sell you as many pounds of shelled pecans you want for $7/lb, otherwise the Chinese will buy every last one without complaining. When I was a kid producers were paid $0.35-$0.50/lb for native pecans and guess what? That is still the price 40 something years later. Too many people in this economy who don't do a darn thing all day long are expecting 10% returns on investment. That is why we have a crisis of masculinity in this country. How can a man be proud of stealing nickels and dimes from everyone else? A man used to be able to point at a Ford truck and say, "Son, I work at the steel factory that makes the steel that made that truck." Now a man says, "Son, I deliberately mislead old people and the working man so I can accumulate little finance charges."

So you can thank the banking institutions on every block for your $12/lb pecans. It has nothing to do with the farmer.

When I was a teenager my name could have been Pecan Sheller about this time of year or his brother Pickemup.

First time I went to my ex-wife's house my future father in law asked me if I would help load some pecans in a truck. I said, "Sure". I didn't know he was talking about a semi trailer. 46,000 pounds in burlap bags. 115 pound sacks. The barn still had hundreds of bag fulls ready to load out.
