Has anyone started pasture overseeding yet? I have some barespots that I will probably start overseeding this weekend since we are starting to get rain now.

I normally wait till end of august but we have been getting some good rain here lately so I just want to try to get a good jumpstart incase its dry at the end of the month... I hope my gamble pays off.

just remember if you get enough rain to bring the seed up.an it turns off real dry you could loose the seed.im going to try to plant TAM 90 rye grass this year.

Excellent point... I am just so happy to see rain im not thinking of anything but trying to get it to grow now while we are getting rain. I will wait till end of august beginning of september to start planting as I normally do.

Haven't even thought much about it....hot and dry doesn't grow much of anything.

I can relate to that. If I overseeded right now, half of it would fall into the deep cracks in the ground and the birds would get the rest. You have a shot at rain Monday as I do and I'm hoping some of those cracks can close up. I do plan to put out winter rye again this year but that's usually a November/December project.

Leaning to that way of thinking myself this year. Decent fall moisture should supply grazing well into December....if it doesn't, oats isn't going to be the answer either. However, oats coming up in January may provide a little more grazing earlier than ryegrass coming up in January....Assuming adequate moisture arrives for Christmas....

As for now and the foreseeable future , I will be using a pasture drill to overseed anything. Seed has gotten to costly to just throw out on top of the ground and hope enough moisture arrives in timely fashion for it to survive. I'll use 5 - 10 lbs of ryegrass seed vs. 25 - 40 broad cast and drug in....

vette oats planted later than oct is a waste of money esp if you dont get rain.we almost planted 75acs of wheat in dec.an we are glad we didnt because it wouldve been a total loss.an we know this because we planted 250lbs of wheat in dec an it didnt give us any grazing.

For frost seeding I use a broadcast seeder everything else is no-till

Would you frost seed anything other than clover?
I've tried in the past and might just as well have spread it on the highway.
