Was wondering how many acres of pasture some of you figure per cow per month to graze in the summer time. And what are your average heard sizes in your area. Am interested in the surrounding states of Alabama or other areas. From up north we hear you don't need much pasture for a cow compared to up here.

In this part of the country, IF conditions are good weatherwise, we let our pastures carry about 1.5 head to the acre.Sometimes, if they are going to be rotationally grazed, we'll run a few extra head. We try to keep it to a head per acre most of the time. Again it all depends how mother nature is dealing the cards. And don't want to overgraze.Another point is what type of pasture you have. Most of our's are fescue and orchard grass, with some clovers.

Same down here in north Alabama

Here in Western North Dakota we run about 3 acres per cow/calf on Green Needle ,Blue Grama and Western Wheat, all native prairie grasses. This is in badlands pasture. On the better pastures up on top where Crested Wheat grass they can run about 2 acres per cow/calf.

From June first to August first is our best grazing . We do run in a grazing association so we are limited to how many cows we can run per acre. We also have a lot of cactis and sage brush.
