To start off, I have had no problems calving this year until now. We have had 25 calves with no issues with 5 more to go. Last week I found one of my cows laying down normal so I didn't bother checking on her. The next morning I week out to check the few cows we have left to calve and I noticed she was still laying down just below where she was the evening before. I went up there and she had her back legs stuck straight out behind her and couldn't get up. I poked her back legs with a pocket knife to see if she I feeling in them and she didn't respond. She wasn't trying to calve so I called the vet. The vet gave her a bottle of calcium IV and we waited to she if it was milk fever, after 20 mins nothing. We ruled out grass tetney because they are in a small lot with hardly and grass, were still feeding them hay. The vet palpated her and said the calf was full term and she was paralyzed from her hips back. The vet did a c-section and then put the cow down. She had a huge 100+ lb bull calf. She was a 6 year old healthy cow and we had no problems with her. The thing is tonight I went to check and another cow is laying down, I took her some feed and she wouldn't eat it. Has anyone seen or heard of anything like this? I can't afford to loose many more cows.
