Not sure about the spelling but can someone share something about cows getting paralized after calving. I've talked to some folks around here and read what I can find in my books but I know some of you will have more. I found a cow down, laying on a newborn, the calf was already dead, maybe the cow fell on it. The cow is 3 and this was her second calf. She was down and made feeble attempts to get up but couldn't get her rear end moving. I took nylon straps and tried to get her upright but she just wouldn't or couldn't get her balance. Cold and raining and figured she'd probably get pneumonia . Anyone got info on this and how common paralyisis is in birthing?

It's not common but it does happen. Usually a large caalf or a breech birth is the cause. The nerve in the pelvis get's pinched between the calf and the bone of the pelvis. Roll her side to side everyday a couple of times, keep feed and water available. Others have had different results, but most of them I've seen have gotten up within a day or 2. One was down for over a month. It's a lot of work to keep them going. Some in subsequent calving may have a problem again, normally not.

as said a large or a breech calf can paralize a cow.because the calf is laying on the nerves of the cows hipps an leggs.a cow can also paralize from being in labor to long without help calving.once a cow gets paralized its hard for her to get over it.most paralized cows end up dieing.

My vet would give the cow a shot of dexamethazone. Call the vet and ask about it.

WE had a heifer, that got pregnant, at 8 months. Just to make a long story short, she was unable to have her calf. The calf had to be pulled. She went down. The vet was out, giving her meds and iv fluids, steroids, also. She was unable to get up on her own., We turned her, kept her from bloating, also. The vet told, us to test her, in the area of her hoofs, to see if she has feeling and movement. She did have feeling., she also had movement. We started getting her up, lifting her with the tractor. She could walk before she could get all the way up. It took a while. WE did other things, iron shots. Put her on a device, where it lifts all 4 legs up and on her feet. Then went back to tractor lifting. She got slowly better. It took about 6 weeks of hip lifting. This happened in Feb of 2006, on November 17th,2007. She had a healthy 70 lb. heifer calf. no problems. calf is doing fine, and mother is doing fine, also.

The heifer got pregnant, by a bull that jumped the fence. To test for the feeling and movement, you test on the area of the rear hooves, using a catte prod. Take the cattle prod, and shock on the area on top of the hooves, where the hooves split. She was 8 months when she got pregnant, 17 months when she tried to have it.

We gave 80cc of Dex yes 80. then 20 the next day and 20 the next day and shot them in the head two days later if they didn't pull out of it. We were calving 8.5 weight heifers and had probably 8-10 that needed the treatment this year.
