Panhandling

“Genuinely ask why they are in the predicament they are,” Tillerson said. “Many have medical conditions, they don’t have the proper identification — you can’t get a job without one. They don’t have a Social Security card. Those little things we take for granted prohibit people from getting a job. Don’t assume they are lazy.”
Why would anyone not have proper ID or a SS card?

I thought it was illegal for anyone to hire 'undocumented' workers..

I think it would be surprising to see what these people do and don't have in their possessions. Survival living doesn't require identification.

What's funny is that this is a pretty positive story. There's no commentary on it which leads me to believe that there are quite a few on here who only like to complain about things.

I saw it as a scam of some sorts. Albuquerque panhandlers in the Washington Post? But then again maybe Washington is so perfect they have nothing there to report on. It was one of those deals if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all.
But since you cast your line out there I might as well bite.

The answer is obviously more regulation.

It's always the answer. People need a ss card for identification, even though it was promised it would never be used for identification.

Sarcasm off...

Is it good to reach out to the most needy? Yes.

Maybe if the mayor has to bend rules to hire people, maybe they aren't good rules.

People need purpose. Work should be required of every welfare recipient.

You can day labor someone until you reach 600.00 then you must take taxes or issue a 1099 if cetain criteria are met.
As far as them being undocumented. While I don't think a employer should be responsible for determining eligibilty to work. I don't believe in working anyone who might possibly be working in this country illegally. As long as they are operating within the same laws as private business is held to. I see it as ok.

We use jail population for this. Called "public service".

I firmly agree with criminals(tax dollar consumption) performing labor tasks for local and state govt instead of living better in prison than many of our elderly do in a nursing home/assisted living center.
I think the program is fine other than its just one more drain on taxpayers. I like the idea of local churches and social outreach groups initiating the program. One of the biggest problems we have is govt took over social welfare and reform and churches and private sector have been minimized...and most govt aren't financially secure enough to see this through for the long haul.

We have sheriff details here that clean the interstate. I love seeing them out there when it's 100, probably the last time they break that law.

Years ago a friend of mines dad in NC had the title "county superintendent of roads". He was the head guard on the road gangs.

We have the Popsicle clothed guys doing community service too. They perform a lot of necessary jobs and do a good job.

We also have a church run outfit that will come and do odd jobs for a fee. Most of these people are homeless or down on their luck. Say you have an old freezer or a bunch of junk in your garage you can pay the to come out and get it. They will then carry the good stuff to some shops they have and sell them and this money goes to help them. They get some donations but for the most part its self supporting. Amazing how much good you can do when you don't have the gov't taking nearly half of what you make.
