Is it ok to see a small amount of blood on the glove after having a cow palpatated. My normal vet did the preg. check, she is a 5 yr. old simm. She's confirmed preg. and due early oct. It was only for a second when the vet pulled his arm out there was a spot of blood about the size of two quarters side by side. Wanted to talk to vet, but cows were not cooperating and it got forgot until they were goin down the driveway. I just wanted to what you guys have experienced. Didnt want to call them back if it was something completely normal. We've done hundreds of dairy cows and i just dont remember ever seeing blood.

When I was learning I use to have blood on the glove often. Seems as you do more and more it's less of an occurance. Even then it would be more like a little streak than a round spot.

Having palpated several cows, its nothing to be concerned about. In performed embryo transfer, I routinely have seen blood on both mine (or the vet that went in before me) sleeve. Cows are very resiliant with this type of trauma and will be fine. However, as an fyi, in horses it is a very bad thing.

Normally the blood is more in evidence if it's the first time a cow/heifer has had an arm in their rectum. That said, it's not all that unusual to see a small amount of blood anytime you do something rectally.
