palapating a cow

I have never paplpated a cow before and recieved a blood test results back saying that she was preg but to retest because she wasnt quite 90 days post. at the time I didnt think it would matter to me but now I would like to know. she should be 130 days preg, what are my chances of doing a palpation never have done one, I have a general idea of the anatomy but like i said never have done one.

There is a reasonable chance you may feel something. Just reach over the brim of the pelvis and just press down with your hand and then pause waiting to feel for the bump of a foetus bouncing back up against your hand. It is very distinctive, do it a couple of times just moving your hand slightly to hopefully feel the bump.

Ken, we did that in our AI class. The cow I palpatated must have had a calf that was 6 months along since I could dribble its head like it was a basketball. You provided a nice succinct way of putting it.

Just don't cull her if you don't know what you're feeling! :lol: Some people take to it like a duck to water and some people are still in a whole new world every time they put their arm in a cow after a couple hundred head.

And before 60 days try not to be too rough palpating her. That could be detrimental to the pregnancy

I could try to tell you what to look for but chances are about 99% that all you're gonna feel is shyt. Sorry. ;-)

Why don't you just draw blood on her again. Biotracking will tell you the protein levels are high enough for them to call her pregnant or she may be slipping the pregnancy and drawing blood just a few days later would be conclusive. That is what I would do before I would attempt to palpate one.

well I tried it (palpating not clitoral stimulation LOL), but I cheated a little by having the guy who ai's for me do it first. He says he doesnt palp his just blood tests, which I am doing on this one too.

I think she may be breed, not exactly sure it was kind of hard to feel because it was almost a straight down after the hip slightlyly down on the left side slightly but i could definately feel something firmer hard to describle but it was definately more solid and felt like it was in a bag!

I think I might go to an ai class and learn a few more things.

I tried palpating 3 of mine today but had no luck. I just had no luck telling what anything I was feeling was. I plan on taking an AI class soon and hopefully I can get some more training. Where do you send your blood off to to get it tested? How much does it cost?

KW I send my samples to a place in Columbus ohio, DHIcoop, sent the sample in on Monday had a report wednsday. They have a website and I order the kit which includes all equipment needed and prepaid test, the test cost me $2.40 per test.

I palpated my first time and thought I felt something staright down after the hip off to the left slightly, On hindsite probably the bladder. She came back as an open, and off to the sale barn this wk( I didn't like this cow much, I paid to much for her) although a little bummed she didn't settle, I like the calving even tho I ownly own a few.

probably the rumen. It gets a bit bulgy.
I have felt calves down in that area but usually find the cervix first and then move forward onto the uterus, bit less guesswork involved.
And yes, I've got it wrong called one open that must have been five -six months at the time.
