What issues do overweight cows deal with other than possible calving problems? What is a good way to take some lbs. off of a cow? What is a good calving weight for and angus mix cow approximately? It is about 7 years old.

Extra weight puts more of a stress on feet and legs. Why are they over weight? If it's just from the natural forage base they're on you might could restrict their access to it. If it's hay you could feed a lesser qualitry hay or mix a poorr quality hay with the good stuff. If it's from supplements, cut out the supplement.
Too many variables to recommend a weight. FS, length, etc all gointo the mix. Individual body condition is a better method of determining the proper weight.

The owner said they were on good pasture all summer and he supplemented with grain last winter. They also didn't calf last year so i'm sure that added to it.

I would definitely want to know why they didn't calve last year?
Nobody I know can afford to keep one that won't take. Our cows can get pretty fat in the early summer when they are first turned out on green mountain grass but usually by end of summer/fall they are a normal weight then they go out on the hayfields and some tend to get a little fatter than others - we'll feed good hay in the winter and during calving and all things tend to level out. It doesn't make sense for us to try to adjust rations to an indiviual - unless one is in exceptionally poor condition and in that case she's probably headed for the sale barn anyway.

I would pass on that deal. Too many cows out there that will calve out. She may never have another calf-fat or just right or skinny. If the guy really thought it was because she was too fat wouldn't he have rationed her to get a calf out of her? Watch out, sounds fishy.

There are a lot of cattle owners out there who don't think their cattle are 'healthy' unless they are butterball fat. Slim these cattle down, and they will probably settle just fine.

precisely why I agree with Dun on this. Dont overfeed... in any case. I see alot of guys feeding way too much protein when all you really need to do is let the cattle graze....

Have the cow's been Preg-checked? Did the Farmer have a bad Bull?? I Like my Cows going into the Winter a little plump. I graze my Cows on Corn Stalks and Hay stuble going into the Winter. When the wind chill gets below zero you'll be glad they have that extra layer. With all that said...do you have a good calf puller??????????
