Last year was our second summer and boy oh boy did we have flies!!!!! OMG they were downright horrible!! BTW I HATE flies. We don't keep a manure pile, what can we do environmentally to keep the fly problem to a minimum?? Can you spread those fly predators on their grazing field? Any other suggestions?

TIA

never seen a fly that couldnt buzz right through the fence from the neighbor's. good charged up back rubs auremiacin in the minerals this time of year maybe a pinkeye vaccine or some eartags.i try too protect the cattle their self rather that waste money on eraticating flies

i think you will be hard pressed to eradicate the flies.
Being in NY I would be curious if resistance has started building up to the fly ear tags, if not i would go that route. May also try rubs.

If you are looking for something around the barnyard, you might want to consider Muscovy ducks. They snap the flies right out of the air. Also, they don't need water to swim in. We have some around the yard here, and they seem to help keep the flies down, they don't eradicate them, but they do reduce the numbers.

Fly predators can be distributed anywhere that manure is present, but depending on how big your pasture is it could get a little troublesome. They only live for about a month so they have to be replenished on a monthly basis as well. I would be more inclined to distribute the predators in the corral areas, put out fly traps (a word of caution - dumping and rebaiting is NOT pleasant, but in this particular area they do an outstanding job! The ability to hold your breath for a substantial period of time or a gasmask, along with a strong stomach, is a definite benefit.), and a good fly bait. Fly sprays cannot be used in the vicinity that predators are present because the sprays will kill the predators as well as the flys, but I see no reason that rubs cannot be put in the pasture. I would also put out a good IGR mineral or Rabon blocks until I had the problem under control. I hope this helps.

We have tried and used predator wasps but you have to begin earlier in the year and replace monthly. not cheap. Fly traps definitely catch flies but that job should be restriicted to the odor inpaired. Not sure if they reduce the population or encourage it.
Back rubs and bullets strategically placed to ensure compliance can help too. Keep them chargd regularly. Also, make sure they are attached well. If you are lucky the cows will use them for scratching fun too! Tough to get the big ones and the little uns with the same rubs
I also use a garden backpack sprayer with Revap or similar to spray them as I walk around. In addition to how many cows you have to treat, guess the effectiveness depends on your aim and how much they (used to) trust you!
Good luck

No, I don't. Maybe some one else does??

Can't say I've ever noticed. Will try to keep an eye out for it. I know the guinea hens really tore up my lawn for grubs
(Japenese beetle's in the making) this spring though.

Has anyone ever tried Golden Malrin fly bait?

The stuff is toxic to animals and birds so I didn't want to just dump it out.

I made a dispenser for it out of a big Gatorade bottle .
I cut holes in the sides and covered them with guttergard to keep birds out.
I hung one in the barn.
I will see if it makes a difference.

Golden Malrin never did much for us...Quick Bait worked very well last year, but I don't see it doing such a good job this year. I wonder if the flies have mutated to a point that Quick Bait is no longer effective...maybe it's because we didn't have much of a winter...maybe it just "because."

I do know that with Quick Bait you can make a thin paste out of it and "paint" it on calf hutches, fence rails, anything really.

Yep, it didn't do a thing. If you can find one called Blue Assassin (sp?) I think was the name, then you should see some results, especially if you use it in conjuction with other methods. What I did was wash out cat food cans and tuna cans and nail them to the top of fence posts around the corrals, then dumped a little of the fly bait in them. Within a day I was finding dead flys in the cans. I also used fly traps. I hope this helps.

Unfortunately there's no easy solution. W have noticeda tremendous reduction in flies with fly tags AND mineral w/ Altosid (IGR) AND a pour on or rub on insecticide. With the mineral they need to be eating it before the flies start comming out for the season. Good luck
