I'm mad... But, not a he## a lot one can do about it with this drought.

It seems that Truckers are supplementing their haul income by buying & re-selling hay (normally not bad). On the other hand, they are jacking up the price of hay from what they buy it for and then re-selling it to desperate ranchers.

We just bought 2 semi-loads of hay out of Oklahoma (via Trucker Entrepreneurs). This was confirmed. They demanded CASH; however, I demanded detailed invoice and gave them our check. Then took them to our bank to get it cashed. I want a paper trail on anything we buy. From the time we ordered the hay (a few days ago), they jacked up the delivred price by $10. a bale. I am embarassed to disclose WHAT we had to PAY for this hay...but, it bought us a few more months of feeding. I have no problem with a Trucker making a decent wage and covering their expenses. However, when a Trucker takes advantage of you (middle finger salute)...I have no respect for them...

We are in the process of liquidating a few more cattle: Slaughter for USDA Inspected beef, and a few to the Sale Barn.

I am watering several of our small pastures & paddocks. Get about equivalent of 1 round bale of grass every 2 weeks or so. With all this dang heat, even with putting 1-2" of water a week, the grass isn't growing much...too hot to do any serious growing!

I've heard of afew folks getting told one price on the phone and when the truck shows up with the hay, its a different price..buyer is inbetween a rock and a hard place...:(

Would be hard to do but would be nice if you could just tell them to stuff it and leave'em with a load of hay. They might be calling you back by sundown unless someone else came along and figured it was a bargain.

If anyone knows of a trucking company looking for a back haul out of florida I can get you some hay reasonably priced here. I just don't know what the freight would be.

We have a trucking business and MINIMUM to make expenses and have something for wages is $2 a mile. And that will vary UP depending on tolls/overweight fines and barring any mechanical issues.
All of our expenses are up this year. Fuel/Insurance/Tires/Oil.... you name it, it's taken a helluva rise.

We have no use for those truckers who are raping livestock producers by hauling sub-par hay and charging primo prices for it... And yes there are plenty of truckers who are opportunists and a-holes, just like in any other business!!

And just to clarify, we do not haul hay.

I'm sorry to hear of your experience RAB... and for anyone else who's had the same thing happen :(

Lazy A how are you covering expenses at $2 pr mile unless you are figuring that is the cost for EVERY mile not just loaded miles
I own my own truck and I sure can't haul for $2 a loaded mile when I have the same amount of miles to go back home empty best I can figure I am needing $3.75 pr loaded mile but that is with NO backhual

You're right.... I wasn't figuring empty miles....

and that's figuring ACTUAL miles, not the trucking dispatch company's figures!! Which are ALWAYS short!

yeah TXBred..I think that is what these people would have liked to have done..but they needed the hay..:(..

Just to clarify, Im not painting all with the same brush..I hate rotten people is all..:)

From what I hear, one-way hauls (original or backhaul) have been running $3.50 to $4.50 a loaded mile.

A good rule of thumb is to look at what the cost of diesel is going for at the pump and that will be your approximate mileage charge.
