Hi everyone, I’m new here and looking for some advice on our open heifer.
A little back story, we got her 2 years ago, she was born June 1st and we got her when she was 3 days old. We didn’t breed her mom that year as they were our first cow/calf pair and missed throwing her out with the neighbour’s bull. We weaned from February until June the following winter and they went out with the neighbour’s cows/bulls July 1st last year. She got pink eye out in the pasture (they’re both Herefords) and was treated and that cleared up within 2 weeks. She did lose a bit of weight and separated herself from the herd. Her mom calved out April 8th and we took the heifer in to be preg checked April 10th and she’s open. The vet did say she doesn’t think the heifer is cycling properly. She’s always been a smaller heifer but since having her preg checked she has been putting on a lot of weight and is looking much better. Is it worth trying to breed her again? We’d love to keep her and she was the first calf we’ve had and we’ve grown attached to her. But completely understand if she can’t reproduce there’s no point in keeping her. We already bought a replacement for her but just wondering if anyone out there thinks it’s worth trying again or maybe going to a different vet? (We really weren’t happy with the professionalism at the vet we went to)
Thanks in advance!

My opinion about your vet is that you need to trust that your vet is giving you professional advise that you can trust. If you do not have that, find one that fulfills your trust. I agree with previous post that you are probably better off to cull. Heifers should be the easiest animals in the herd to settle if they are cycling normally. simply because their reproductive system has no scar tissue or infection damage from previous calving issues. Your post does not state how long she was with the bull, but if she got pink eye shortly after turn out and lost weight, she may have not have cycled due to stress. If you try to breed again, have a vet verify that she is cycling or watch for signs of heat before turn out. if you see more than one heat cycle or confirmed open during preg check, cull or keep as a pet. At least you will give her a second chance if she has sentimental value.

OR ---- was she in good enough body condition to get bred as a heifer?? What did she weigh when she was turned out with bull? Weight/size has a huge affect on cycling. Since you are new, you may not be able to tell the difference between being too thin and having a lot of hair. New owners "love" their animals and do not see faults or poor management.
