Oldest Cow

What is the oldest cow on the farm and when do you plan to get rid of her if at all ?

Oldest 3 are 12, they are the last 3 I have out of my first 5 brangus heifers, they were the first cattle I ever owned, I bought them when I was 10, and they weighed 527lbs the 27th of may in 2002 when I bought them.

It will depend on how they age, 2 of them look closer to there age, and 1 looks as good as anyone's best 4 year old cow in every way, and I will probably let her die on the place.

In the 20's? Wow.. People always told me when they get about 10 years old i should let them have one last calf then sell them.

There like people, there is in no way any set age that a cow is done.

Gotcha.. I was watching a online sale at a cow that was 9 years old and man she still looked good but I would have been leary buying her until yall told me that yall have ones that are way older doing the job.

A lot has to do with finding cow's that function well in your environment and hold's BCS.

Learn to be a grass farmer first good grass equals good teeth and bcs.

Gotcha.. I was watching a online sale at a cow that was 9 years old and man she still looked good but I would have been leary buying her until yall told me that yall have ones that are way older doing the job.

Unless I am just buying ones to trade after a while,i don't hardly ever buy any older than 6 or 7 to keep. I just like starting with younger ones.

I basically keep all my heifer calves born... I would like to think my grass is good I may even attempt to add alfalfa to my big pastures that have og fescue and ladino and cinnamon clover..

I hauled 35 to 40 cow's for my neighbor during the drought all Brimmer crosses all were in ther mid 20's and had great teeth.
When they went through the barn everyone came through as a 7 or 8 year old they were that good of shape.

mine are just hitting 2nd gear at ten.... i retain my heifers..

My oldest right now are about 8 yrs old and still producing scale busting calves. Both are red angus x Limi cows. They are mostly like big pets. Very gentle and always wanting a petting or ear scratch. They will probably die here.

Yea, If I have some that are still doing well after 10 year mark I will let her stay till they die too.

Based on her bangs tag Granny was 27 when we finally put her down last winter. We had her 15 years and she never missed calving, raised her own and an orphan one year both of which are still in the herd.
