odd color calf in our herd

Dial up users beware .... takes 3 minutes to download pic and I got tired of waiting for it....

You have a red calf which means his momma has a red gene and the bull had a red gene..... unless another bull got in the pasture.

We are beginners just getting started with our cattle. We have started with Black Angus heifers, and cows that were already bred. We have had 12 calves so far, and all are black except this one. Poor little guy really stands out. What breed do you think he is?

I think he'll be black when he sheds that winter coat. See the circles around his eyes? I've got a rusty brown calf, but his nose is black, feet are black, etc. I know he'll be black when the winter hair is gone. On the other hand, a 3/4 brother to him is black as coal. Go figure.....

Looks like the Chianina and Brown Swiss coming out of the Angus woodpile.

Never used to see these until the 70's.

He'll be black by weaning time in the fall.

That high back hip definately looks Chi

After seeing about 7,000 Tarentaise/Angus cross calves, I don't think that is the case in this instance.

This looks like a good number of registered Angus calves I've seen.

Well, I'm glad I don't have dial-up...or I might have missed seeing this calf. He sure is a nice one. :)

kslady- Don't have compassion for him. He is a pretty good calf. Angus - with parents carrying Red genes. He will, in all probably, stay predominately "reddish". You might run a "SEARCH" on his parents, if they are registered, and check if there is a carrier in his parents, one or the other or both.
