Observing how others do things

I've mentioned before my new transplant neighbor who is running about five head to the acre and 30 goats per linear highway mile, not to mention the donkeys and geese he raises within the confines of his property that has only two fences. After five years, numerous complaints and numerous animal fatalities on the highway the buzzards are going to be uspset as he is now making a push to raise money so he can put put another fence up which - when complete - will mean he has 50% of his perimeter fencing completed. (if that don't hold em in I don't know what will) To do this he and two other rocket scientists are clear cutting a swamp on his property. They are dragging the hardwood to the hill and bucking it into 12' sections so they can load it onto his 12' trailer. It takes about a day for the three of them to load the trailer then he hauls it 25 miles to a chipping plant where he is getting $40 per load. There is so much advice I'd like to give him but - of course - he knows it all so I just observe and take notes on what not to do. One, is if you are cutting trees down with a chain saw I think it best not to put up a new fence immediately before you plan to cut the trees down .... unless of course you just like putting up fences. Of course they do say twice is a charm. Anyhow its been an interesting five weeks and I'm quite sure they have made nearly $500 if you don't count the fuel, labor, oil or anything else. Its nothing short of amazing.

Yup...just got one of those myself. Lawyer from "Big City" (makes me look experienced) bought the 15ac place next to me. Spent a ton fixing the frame house and then told me he was getting about 30hd of cows for the coastal bermuda river bottom. Traditional grazing here calls for about 12ac per AUM in a "good" year. He asked my thoughts on what he could make on doing this. I replied that wasn't sure about the prices at the barn, but I would give him about 10 cents on the dollar per scrawny head when he was ready to sell, which I figured, in this drought, would be March or so.

I would have liked to get the place, but $10K/ac???????

Oh! and in the department of "who thinks what of who": I am the "county nut" to others. You should have seen the cars/trucks lined up on my hwy fence when we trotted out a no-till drill, planted native mixes instead of hay grazer and didn't apply chems to the weeds....mostly the older- gen guys from before me (incl. my dad), but they were highly entertained at my expense. ;-)

Makes you wonder what there thinking? :bang: My neighbor wanted to trade two jack's for a steer, told him no thanks, then his wife calls mine and tells her they'll throw a horse in and thats it a great deal. Damm jackass neighbors.

Sounds like he is at least willing to get off his a$$. My know it all neighbor runs about 50 head of cows and 15 horses. He only sees em in December when he needs money. Never gets off the couch. His neglected trash bin of a house should cave in on him any minute.

here is a good one for ya
we just bought another 148 acres that joins us it is all in grass and hayfields place has been neglected for the last 10 yrs but still has pretty good grass because it wouldn't hold cows because of no fences
the neighboring place is owned by an elderly woman in the nursing home her grandaughters ex husband runs cows on it in the winter and since the fences are crap and he has no grass most of the winter they stay on the place we just purchased
I told him he neede to get his cows off of our place and we were going to be putting in a new boundary fence this spring
he says well you are going to put a gate in the fence aren't you
I said no I didn't see the need for it
he says well how am I supposed to winter my cows over there if there isn't a gate to go back and forth
I said you aren't going to winter your cows on our place
he says well I need that grass and it ain't right for you to have it all cause my cows have been eating there for the last 5 yrs and I have a right to it

oh did I mention his son is the meth head who went thru 3 counties stealing fence post and gates off of fences including some of mine and the neighbors
and his ex wife is in prison for murder
I love living in BOOGER county, Mo

and people wonder why we go armed all the time

I have one of these type neighbors also.In a way he's a good neighbor. He's taught me a bunch of what not to do's.
Called me up to help him get a bull back in one time. When I got there he was trying to run it back through where it got out.I suggested taking him around to the gate and running him back in.
His reply was"I don't have a gate". This feller is shore ate up with the dumba$$.Owns about 40 dogs.
Don't blame the bull for wanting some gone from there.

Got a neighbor that is nicknamed Boda. Been calling him that for years, and he has no idea what it means but he answers to it. Gave him the name after he shot his three middle toes off his right foot with a shot gun while he was driving down the road and he blamed it on his dog that was riding in the back of the truck. Big Ole Dumb Ass.

Aren't all transplant neighbours like that?
Only the neighbors of who is doing the talking are like that, Surely his neighbors can;t think the same about him

For some time I have been observing how others do things. If I did thngs like some of them, I would have starved out or been mortally kilt a long time ago. Yet they seem to come through and do just fine. :bang:
If somebody can exlain this conundrum to me it would be appreciated.:help:

PS. I have been looking for a chance to use the word "conundrum" for a while. I said to myself, self, it is now or never. That may be my new word for the year.

:lol2: But of course not. Well ok, I'm still living down a few things but that's beside the point. I've always felt if I'm gonna tote water my bucket is going to have a bottom in it. As for cattle, I think you should put in fences before you start buying cattle. And goats. And two legged steers. And geese. And emus. and well you know ..... varmints and such.
