I have made up my mind to use oats as a cover when redoing ten acres my question is this. When I was a kid I remember dad doing this and baling the oats in the milk stage. If I do this how long do you let the oats dry? Like hay or bale them wet.

Sorry for the dumb question.

dry for dry hay - here they are cut in may-june and let dry just like hay and then rolled.

we have a custom baler around here that does hayledge and wraps the bales. they are a higher % moisture but not sure what the % is.

What I've seen fed would have about 20-30 gallons of water (nasty stinky juice) run out when you cut the wrap off so moisture is pretty high.

I cut oats, and they are past the milk stage, and closer to dough ball. I let mine dry down, till they are as dry as hay.

Yep I think I was wrong. After reading your post I am pretty sure that was what dad done.

Wish me luck next spring.
