I have had six calves from my gert cows out of my Angus bull. All gerts were bought as registered heifers. I recently noticed one of the new calves have nubs. I did not realize this was possible. There is no question about the breeding. Has this happened to anybody else?

yes, we have a calf out of an Angus cow crossed with our Beefmaster bull. We thought the polled gene would be dominant, but the calf is starting to show nubs. Get them removed before the flies get too bad if you don't want horns.

Are they horns or scurs? Horn are affixed to the skull, scurs you can move a littl bit. Totally different genes then horned/polled

dun

Could they be scurs? Purebred does not preclude the animal from carrying the gene for horns, though, especially if they were bred up. We used to get a few calves each year that had horns out of our Murray Greys - danged if I know why, though. I know why, but I don't know the cows origins and breeding like I used to, so I don't know WHY - if that makes any sense.

Yes... any breed with "Bos Indicus" or Brahman influence can produce scurrs. They'll pop up occassionally.. no matter if the dam and sire are polled.

Scurs happen in the Hereford breed ocassionally -- they're registered as scurred, but considered polled. For show animals, you don't remove the scurs, if you do they'll appear horned.

are the calves with buttons male or female? if it is only the males, you probably have some scurs. as far as scurs go, a registered Angus bull should be homo polled (PP) and homo non-scur (ss).

so at least, all the calves will have 1 copy of the polled gene (Pp or PP) and should have no more than 1 copy of the scur gene (Ss or ss). since females dont show hetero scurs, only the males should exhibit scurs with this breeding.
