Bred prices are all over here. Seems like the BTOs are loading up because they believe the cattle futures will make them rich, but the hobby guys are holding back because they think chasing cattle profits is too much work. Fleshy black bred heifers are about U$S 1850. Big fat black cows bring almost as much. Thin cows were U$S 800 to 1100.

I sold some old, bred cows for U$S0.92 per pound today. Bred sale volume was about a third of last year.

Quality still drives the market. The top cows were out of a 80 hd retirement. They were super quiet and good quality commercial cows.

Tuesday, December 6, 2022 - Packer Day-Breeding Stock Sale

A big crowd was on hand for tonight's cow sale and the bidding was active especially on the dispersal consiginments! Majority of the cows were 2nd and 3rd periods with a good number of young cows in the offering. The sale top was a nice group of 5 year olds that left the ring at $2500. Several more packages traded from $1900 to $2475 with the next cut selling from $1625 to $1875. Small groups and singles mostly found new homes from $1600 and down!

Bred Heiers topped at $2200 on a limited test alng with aout 36 pairs that also sold from $2200 and down!

427 slaughter cattle incuding 192 fed steers and heifers that sold with moderate demand on a top of 165.50. Overall quality not as attrctive as last week's offering!

Slaughter cows and bulls on a heavy run sold mostly steady with condition more uneven than last couple weeks.

I went to a bred cow sale for a while today. They said there is 800 head of bred cows and heifers. I left early because I wanted to beat the weather that is moving in this evening. Started with a total dispersal of 265 cows. Started with 86 head of solid mouth cows bred 6-7 months. Sold in lots of 20-22 with the option to take the remaining cows. $1,835 first guy took 42 head. 48,000+ pounds, a semi load. A ring load of broken mouth cows from the dispersal brought $1,250. 31 head of good looking 1,000 pound reputation heifers bred 6 months sold for $1,700. Full mouth 6-7 month bred cows continued to sell in the $1,700-$1,850 range in smaller groups.

I expect the prices to be higher in the spring for anything that's capable of having a calf. Young or old, short bred or long bred.

Anyone from NE TX have thoughts on selling the last 2 weeks of 2022? The Paris sale barn on Wednesday had a very good sale, very good prices compared to the previous 3 weeks. I missed it due to bad weather, but now I'm wondering if the next two sales will be weak due to people travelling and vacation time. Maybe early January is a better time to sell?

The last sale up here was today; I had planned on trying to buy some bred cows, but was to late; the sale was over with by the time I got there. I will have to wait until next year.
