"Downer cow" ban may be eased
The Bush Administration may ease the “downer cow” ban so that some injured cattle can be slaughtered for human food.
Early last year, following the nation’s first reported case of BSE, the USDA prohibited the use of any downer cattle — those too sick or injured to walk — from being slaughtered for human food. Follow this link for more information http://abcnews.go.com/Health/wireStory?id=673756.

Buddy of mine owns a slaughter house. He said that even if the animal falls and cannot get up comming off the trailer at the slaughter house, it is considered a down cow and cannot be slaughtered.
So, a basically healthy animal falls and becomes "down" while at the butcher...you are SOL. Easing up on that rule may be good.

I agree it may be a good thing, I was against the complete banning of downed cows in the first place. But so much has been made of it in the media, that now I'm afraid this will just provide more fodder for the anti-meat groups, and probably rcalf too.

I agree with that also. Just because a cow falls and has a broke leg or a calving injury doesn't mean she's sick in any way. If there's no fever then I see no reason to ban them.

I know what you mean Dave. Laws made that prohibit us from being profitable. Laws made by people who lack a real world perspective on how meat, milk and produce gets to their table.
