Went to the cow sale this morning and calf prices were so depressing there- I decided to go up and check on cows and see what I had for stubble left to graze...Took the new pocket size camera Grandma got me and was trying it out...

Another 9 year old daughter of the same bull ( one of the best cowmakers I've had....This cow has 1/4 holstein (out of an old nurse cow)..

Another older Tribute cow and her calf..

This and the next picture are of a heifer that will never make it out of the 4 frame category- out of the double bred 6807 bull I had, and a little hereford cow- and her first calf...This is the one that if I had my druthers, I'd love to have 200 of- and as much as she hates dogs- I guarantee no coyote will ever get her calf...

Same heifer with her 600+ lb March steer calf

The WCR Floret 749T # 15802668 ( Cole Creek Track Hunter 60R) yearling daughter I got from Whitney Creek Ranch- Taylor...In comparing her with some of my home raised heifers- I don't think she will be more than a 4 frame cow....

Altho several of you have accused me of losing my mind- this is to prove that after a foot of snow- and single digit temps-- we have dandelions blossoming and going to seed...

Thanks for the pictures; its good to see some of the northern country as well as your cattle.

I can feel the cold winds blowing across that exposed looking country. Has it got cold yet? Thanks for the pictures.

Colin- we had a snowstorm come in and dump a record 14 inches of snow in one day- but it then warmed right up and melted...Temps been running in the 50's and 60's with lows in the teens and 20's (one night got to 9)--but the grass, volunteer wheat, and dandelions are still growing  ...I guess the ground is still warm enough....
They're predicting the weather to turn a little colder and nastier in about a week- so may have to go with the calves even tho the prices are terrible..

Oldtimer, I went to the sale today and watched 600lb blk baldie steers bring $.92 makes me sick to see that. Are you folks that bad?

Yep- same thing here Thursday...Just sad- and there are a lot of calves out here that have to be off the BLM/State pastures by Nov 1-and most aren't contracted as usual-- so if folks don't have some stubble fields or deeded pastures to put them on, they're having to sell and take it in the shorts.....
:(
I saw some nice calves sell Thursday- and didn't see any bring $1.00 while I was there...

It seems to be that way all over.. Look at my thread in the Cattle Sales .."check out these price drops from last week" They were down $3 to $5.

Cattle prices are generally not too bad here in Australia. The Australian dollar is around 57/58 cents, which usually means that our cattle prices are OK. But with the world financial woes at the moment its held them back a bit I think. The trouble with our prices is that they vary so much across this big country. I could take a big beefy cow to Victoria and get $1100,move her up to our local yards and get $850 then over the border to Queensland and get $1,000. There's too much collusion with livestock agents buyers etc here. Some yards have a good array of buyers others two or three,so they regulate the price to a fair degree each sale. What all vendors should do is take their animals home every now and then,to liven the buyers up and make them pay a fair price. I know this wouldn't work because each producer has committments unbeknown to each other,so even a low price might be enough money to bail a person out of financial corner. There could be drought or other climatic reasons. I guess we just have to put up with it.We had a hot day here yesterday till a bit of a cool change came through. Rained a measley 4 mls overnight and still misty this morning. Supposed to be branding today. Will decide later on this morning if we still go ahead with the job.
