Looking at getting satellite tv. Dish vs Directv any input?

Call around and see what kinds of deal you can get. I have Dish through ATT, and I am paying 47.00 a month for it. I am going to start calling around. I get about 15 calls a week from Dish providers. ATT might be offering specials, too. I get the phone and Dish bundled in the same bill, which is convenient. I used to get DSL through ATT, too, but started getting calls on my bill to Scotland and such. It was going through the computer. I went back to dial-up when it happened repeatedly and the phone company said the could do nothing about it. That might have been something wrong with the computer, or something. But I have never had that happen with dial-up. I also don't seem to have the issues with pop-ups either. My DSL had pop up blocker, but it never seemed to work. I never get them now.

Dish network dropped OLN last year right before the PBR finals without warning or notice...

I have Direct now and Dish has been trying to get me to switch.
Dish has offered me free DVR, and ALL of the channels they have for $40 per month to change over. Might do it.
The local channels are available through direct here but are not available in HDTV. I have to get them HDTV via airwave. Kind of a pain, switching back and forth from antenna to satellite sometimes.

I have Dish, never had Direct-Tv. They are very competitive, so you'll pay about the same with both. Think about what you want (sports, movies, educational, etc) and look for those channels in the packages. The packages include lots of stuff you'll NEVER watch, so don't choose on number of channels. You pay extra to get "Local channels", so remember that. That is how you get ABC, NBC, etc.
Lammie, are you happy with dialup? A hi speed connection matters a lot to me. If I had to go back to dialup and a 28 k connection (that's what I had most of the time) I'd go crazy.

You know, John, most of the time I am pretty happy with dial up. The only time I get real steamed is when I want to download video. Then I wish I had DSL. I just had an absolute nightmare with it, though. Just one issue after another. In the time I have taken to type this, I would have had 40 pop-up ads.

And it has a spell check button on it (not that you need it) that will spell check anything you type in a browser window. I could not live with out it. O yea and you have a Google search spot right on your tool bar at top of the browser.

I have Directv, the folks have Dish. The biggest difference I've noticed is that anytime the wind blows hard they lose the signal, but I don't. Might just be an area thing, I don't know. Storms also tend to knock Dish out, but doesn't usually phase Directv. Again, may be an area thing.

I have Dish Network and that happens to me all the time. The wind blows, it rains, it snows; no signal. Really makes me mad during monday night wrestling. I've thought several times about switching to Directv myself.msscamp":1gokgqev said:

We've had Dish for the past 8 or 9 years. We have the top 180 package ( which is everything except the movie channels.) and 2 receivers (keeps the peace better that way 
)for $63.73/month. However, we are considering going to HD in one room and are checking between Dish and Direct. I'm pretty PO'd at Dish - their really good HD specials are for "new customers" only. How 'bout that customer appreciation? So we are seriously looking at changing to Direct. Our reception is usually great - except for during a real downpour but we're in the midst of drought so haven't had that problem lately.

I've had both and I will never go back to Direct. I had trouble with them from the get-go but the straw that broke the camels back was when their receiver failed and I COULDN"T GET A REPLACEMENT without signing another contract!!!!! (Are you reading this DIRECT TV?)
I didn't find much difference in price but I just have the basic service plus local channels - local being San Antonio.
Be careful with Direct is my advice based on personal experience.

We have the Direct TV HD Package, and it was a great deal, because we got a 200.00 rebate check on the HD receiver when we signed up. The only hitch was we had to keep the service 24 months, and the HD package is 9.99 a month on top of the regular service. We got a free DVD palyer too.
The problem with any of the satellite services, is the outsourcing of calls.Seems certain times of day, Habib Mohammad gets the calls.
