I no-tilled about 8 acres of rye today. Some for the cows to graze later and some to bale for hay. I am a big fan of rye. I fed some rye silage last year and there was 0 waste. Anyway just wondered what all you older guru's think of planting rye this time of year and wondered how much forage and when it will produce. Put it into some pretty fair ground, planning on 60 lbs. urea/acre before the next rain and another round of urea in the very early spring. I planted forage rye, not the yard grass type. Thanks for any input you may have.

you cant beat a good stand of rye grass.you can start grazing it in dec through march.then pull off an let it grow till may an bale for hay.

Im not a guru or anything but i plan on doing about the same thing you have done. But i want to add wheat, oats and the rye and see what kind of forage it can produce to lower the burden of putting out alot of hay. I was going to no till drill in at the end of September-first of October but i dont know where your located and all the differences.
Anyway good look! :)

the best time to notill your rye clover wheat an oats is sept 1st to the 15th.so hopfully youll be grazing it by mid nov.we always started our planting by sept 1st.an we would dry the seed in.

If I planted rye now it would germinate and fry in the heat. I got to wait till late September early October. Just too hot here to do it now.

It would be helpful to have at least some idea of where you are located. Nothing in your profile or post which gives any idea. Comments will differ based on your location as Jogeephus indicates.

Sorry but no location on posts is one of my sore points - it really reduces the usefulness of much of the information shared here. jmho.

For the record, I am planting some rye and clover this weekend in WI.
