DaimlerChrysler is rumored to be talking with General Motors about a possible sale of the Chrysler group, according to the Detroit News. Citing company sources, the article alleged that talks were currently in full swing but are still at an early stage.

The report came the same day that Chrysler announced its massive restructuring and recovery plan that it hopes will turnaround the $1.47 billion loss it suffered last year.
 
We were discussing this on a truck list that I belong to. I can't see GM buying Chrysler. They're not exactly floating in bucks right now either, so I'm not sure if they'd even be able to swing the dollars (rumored to be 16 billion).

I think we'll see a Chinese company buy them, and move most of the manufacturing offshore to avoid the high labor costs that are killing the Big 3 right now.

Being an owner of a Chevy 2500HD truck with Duramax/Allison setup, I'd say the Dodge thinking is, "If you can't beat'em, join'em" ;-)

I guess Ford will be next to join the GM/Chevy team.

Rod. Toyota, Honda, Mercedes, and Hyundai have recently set up shop down south here making cars and trucks with much less payroll expense (Because of lack of UNIONS). They also are getting BILLIONS in incentives to relocate here. My city and state gave over $1 BILLION to Hyundai for their new plant.

If GM and Ford were to try this....the unions would cry all the way to capitol hill.

They are in a hell of a pickle.

I would venture to say it is not the non-unions that give the foriegn MFG's an advantage, but being able to hire a younger work force, that is more healthy, there fore having a cheaper inusrance plan or maybe none at all. Plus no retirement expense for the next 45 years with the same workers. Also the younger work force does not require as much money to start, but to keep them they will have to finally compete. Plus I had much rather see GM have Chrysler that the Germans. When the Germans bought Chrysler there was enough cash to nearly pay for it. Now the cash is gone and the Germans do not need Chrysler any more. If the American citzens do not finally realize what is happening with the loss of jobs in America then our way of life will be really be comformized. I think we can finally here the sucking sound that Ross Perot emphazied in his Presidential campaign.
 
A business like GM or Chrysler can be in the red for years and still get all the money they want. Do you guys realize what kind of income/FUTA/SS tax breaks they get and they can be years behind on paying them and get off with no penalty etc. If the Feds approve it and they agree to do it GM or Chrysler or Honda or anybody can buy each other out. I might help this "strong" economy I keep hearing about.

Thanks, Mike. I wasn't aware that the Hyundai plant was non-union. I figured the UAW would have their sticky fingers crammed in there somewhere.

Unfortunately though, if someone were to buy out Chrysler, I believe they'd be stuck with the current union. So the only way around that would be to close the plants down, fire the workers, and re-open plants in other areas. I'm weak on US labor laws, so if this is incorrect please correct me.

Pensions and health insurance are competititve disadvantages for Ford, GM and Chrysler. They are the most significant factor in the demise of the Big 3. You will buy it because we built it thinking is #2.

But those lucrative Pensions and Health Benefits were due to pressure by the Unions!

Ford does not own any portion of Cummins Inc.. Currently, the Dodge/Cummins and the Ford/Navistar agreements are set for the next several years, and no announcements have been published that we are aware of, by either company, to change engine suppliers. We would not expect GM to use Cummins diesels in their pickups, since they are affiliated with Detroit Diesel, which is one of Cummins major competitors.

Ford does NOT own any portion of Cummins. In 1994, Ford purchased 10% share of Cummins stock and currently uses Cummins B5.9 and C8.3 engines in their F-series trucks, larger than F550. Ford uses the Navistar Power Stroke engine in their pickups, that are F550 or under.

However, as of January 1, 1997, Cummins purchased back all of the original shares from Ford, therefore Ford no longer has any direct financial connections with Cummins. However, Ford still purchases some Cummins engines and are considered a very good Cummins customer.

My son works for Detroit Diesel, which is also owned by Diamler Chrysler. He said rumor was that Chrysler was working on buying stock in Cummins so they could hang onto the engine when their contract runs out. He said they were planning on putting a small diesel built in Italy by Mercedes, but feedback was pretty negative on that.

Back in the early 90's, Ford bought less than 15% of outstanding Cummins stock. Many companies buy into other products to add diversity, corner a market, or form an alliance. In 1997, Cummins repurchased all stock previously owned by Ford, and no Ford management is now on the Cummins board of directors. Since 1998 in the pickup market, Cummins B engines are exclusively contracted to Chrysler, an arrangement that both companies are eager to continue. Ford medium duty (class 6 and 7) and heavy duty (class 8) trucks are available with Cummins B engines. Hey, if it's good enough for a Ford 10 ton truck, I think the Cummins B is adequate for my Ram pickup! You can keep your Power Stroke. :-)

So it appears they are not part of cummins anymore but at one time some Ford management was invovled.

So that there proves that at one point in time ford had their grubby hands in the cummins pot. What ya think about that mr. cfpinz?

Cowboyup, I wanted to see the proof about the Ford ownership of Cummins. If what you posted is factual, I don't think that constitutes ownership as I understood your first post. I did not and will not call folks derogatory names on this board. I do at times have fat fingers when typing.
 
That whole "Ford owns Cummins" is a fallacy. As was posted, Ford did buy 15% of Cummins stock, then sold it two years later.

Everyone repeat after me:

FORD HAS NO OWNERSHIP OR CONTROL OF CUMMINS. AT ALL. PERIOD.

For the proof of this statement, please visit cummins.com (the official website) and check the FAQs (or press releases, I don't recall). You'll find it there. So please, for gods sake, quit telling people that Ford owns Cummins. They do not, and even when they owned 15% of the stock, they had very little say in its direction.

Edit: Sorry if my tone offends anyone, but this little fallacy is a pet peeve of mine. By the time anyone found out that Ford owned part of Cummins, they'd already sold it. So if anyone really cared to verify something, they would have checked and seen that Ford had already sold it.

You know what they say, ignorance is bliss. :lol: I'm about as clueless as the next guy, and can't say that any social class other than redneck appeals to me, so I reckon I ought to be mad at myself. This is gonna take some deep thought.
