Yesterday at the sale in Fitzgerald, GA there was only 99 head of cows and calves were run through the sale ring. And the sale in Ashburn which is the largest in GA only had a little over 700 head total for sale last week. Just stopped by the sale barn in Hawkinsville and it looked like there was less than 200 total head there for sale today. If this keeps up how can the price keep going down?? Right now nobody's making any money at the sale barn around here. The feed lots are ripping us off, and the price fixing needs to stop.

COMMENTS

Slaughter classes 2 to 3 lower . Calves and feeder steady on the heavier weights and 3 to 5 higher on calves weighing 300 to 500 . Not enough replacement cows to establish a trend, but looked to be steady. Uncertainty of corn supply and prices and the extreme heat and drought over most of the nation still the main factor concerning the market. I still believe that the low cattle numbers are in our favor. Fed cattle coming out of the western feedlots lower last week with direct sales @ 112.0o to 114.00 .

Calves here are going down fast.

Receipts: 3163 Last Week: 3556 Year Ago: 2651

Compared to last week's sharp decline, steer calves under 650 lbs were an
additional 10.00-25.00 lower this week, with weights under 450 lbs 20.00-30.00
lower, weights over 650 lbs 5.00-8.00 lower, although a load lot heavy 8 weights
sold near steady. Heifers under 600 lbs 13.00-22.00 lower, over 600 lbs 6.00-
13.00 lower. Supply moderate, quality, especially in early goings, well below
normal, where Summer stress factors had obviously taken tool. Demand light to
moderate, buyers had some orders Tuesday, but with the industries current gloom
and doom atmosphere, were forced to buy'em cheaper again this week. Similar
situations all across cattle country is said to be causing some auction market
owners and even a few market reporters to at least consider leaving the country
for just a while or surely until the dust settles. Perhaps one fellow producer
said it best when he reminded us of an old sayin' "That one has to laugh a
little these daze, just to keep from crying". Supply consisted of 52 percent
steers and 48 percent heifers. Near 47 percent weighed over 600 lbs.

Sale numbers has been down the last two weeks or so here at my local barn in South Central MO but before that numbers were at record highs. With our drought and severe hay shortage I know of many producers who have sold out, sold down, or sold light calves way earlier than normal.

most people around here are going to hold all their calves till after oct.as thats when they say the prices will go sky high again.now add in the droughts in the northern states.an theres no telling how long the prices will stay up.

The feedlots are not ripping you off, they are trying to get back some of the money they lost in over paying for your calves earlier this year and last fall. If you really want to blame someone for the price of calves despite the lower numbers, blame our government's mandate on the use of ethanol in fuel. It has created a demand for grain that makes grain worth more for ethanol production than for feeding livestock. Just look back to before the mandate, corn was around $2 to $2,50 per bushel, now it is way over $7 per bushel. When corn was cheap, it made sense to make ethanol. Want to see cheaper feed costs, get your congressman to vote to end the ethanol mandate and subsidies for ethanol plants. Feed grains would go down quickly.

I second that feedlots are not ripping you off.
There is a shortage of calves- if they are not competing for them(ie pushing the price up) its because they cannot make money with them.
the solution is for the Americans to get used to paying 40-50% of their income on food.

The timing of an ethanol mandate couldn't have been worse-- If farmers had had better weather(the last two years) to build up a surplus again(we all know they can do it) it would have been good for everyone. When tieing food costs to energy costs - it forces people to pay the true value for food.
Farmers problems have always been that the " pie"(consumer costs) is too small- and leaves us competing with each other for who reaps the profits each year. the "pie" needs to be bigger so there is enough money to go around for all segments.
Had the grain farmers been able to produce good crops for the last two years- we would ALL be loving the ethanol mandate. Now its going to hurt- but the end result may be good for those that survive- this will definitely force people to pay the true value of food.
