Well it is a 3 calf morning. But not a black calf morning. Normally buying these one and done cows it is a real rainbow herd. Not so much this year. There is 4 red white faced cows, 4 solid red cows, and Charlie the Charolais. The other 55 are all either black or baldie cows. None of the white face cows look straight Hereford. No line backs. This morning there is a white face cow with a red brockle faced calf. Red calf that looks like red Angus cross. Big rangy white face cow with a yellow white faced calf. Probably a Char cross. And a solid black cow with a red white faced calf. Hmmmm genetics at work. What did Forest Gump's mother say about a box of chocolates? Tagged 6 calves yesterday. All of them either solid black or black brockle faced.

This morning my binoculars in the feed truck were fogged up and dirty so I couldn't read cow numbers. Went back out on the quad with the good glasses. Found a fourth new calf. This one is black. I bought cows preg check to calf in February and March. February was a bit slow but things have sure turned around in March. There has been at least one calf every day since the 5th. There has been 19 calves in the last 8 days. And the day is a long ways from being over.

And another new calf. Again this one is black. That is 5 today out of this small herd. It seems like every time I go out there today there is another new calf. I think I should wait another hour or two so I can have another one.

I joked about it with the wife and on here that every time I go out there today I find another new calf. I guess I was too impatient this time. No new calf but the water bag is out on #51. So #6 for the day should arrive soon. These cows really have their ducks in a row today. Not often you get 10% of the herd to calf on the same day.

I had over 10% of the herd calve one day last week, but those cows were synced and A.I.ed over a 4-day period. Luckily the weather was pretty nice. It can be a horrible thing when a blizzard hits during the due date of a synced up herd 😳
