................."To check for nitrates, split the corn stalk longways - take the eye dropper (filled with the testing solution - 80% sulfuric acid) and start dropping the solution at the bottom of the stalk moving up towards the tassel - a dark blue stain (the darker, the higher level of nitrates) made from the reaction of the nitrates in the stalk indicate high levels of nitrates present in the stalk. Normally, the higher you move up toward the tassel, the less nitrates are found. Cattle (when grazing) normally won't consume the high fiber stalk below the ear attachment BUT when making silage this portion of the stalk is harvested THUS the potential for nitrate poisoning in cattle. If high nitrates are found in silage, the recommendation is for it to ensile for 3 weeks prior to feeding AND THEN recheck for nitrate levels. Cattle will acclimate to nitrates gradually'.................
