I have 2 cows that trace back to her and 3 daughters of those cows. Testing - again - here we come!Brandonm22":gttg1g0u said:I like AI and ET but something is wrong when half of the Angus cows in Australia trace back to Freestate Barbara 871 of Kaf, a cow born in Indiana in 1978.
Yes, I believe you are right about the test. Soon I hope! I found the gentleman that has the mother to my possible carriers, praying that I only have one test to pay for and it comes back negative. I understand the defect is not very common and if you are like me, it's in the 7th or 8th generation. I'd say a really good chance of a neg test.Betty":1wzvbqxp said:Well, we were nearly wiped out as seedstock providers by AM and NH. Culled down to 10 cows. But, sadly we then used on those cows a son of Boyd on Target, today I see he's a CA bull.
I guess the forces of nature want me to sell meat.
We have 5 beautiful halter broke heifers bred right that were to be the start of our "build back up". Four of the 5 have some Bando somewhere.
I'm sick.
No commercial test available yet for CA, right?

These affected sires were real popular where we live.
He's right. We stayed away from most of the "Popular" sires and only used those that matched up with each individual female. We did not use the negative epd sires (seems these are a lot of 1680's progeny) We also had/used the advice of our local beef specialist, Regional Angus director, and questioned the geneticist at the University of Missouri at Columbia, Mo. Use your resources - not just this board of "opinions" lol.RD-Sam":owe7tl6r said:Betty":owe7tl6r said:Our trouble is that we started only 16-18 yrs ago with the angus, and we were hoping for commercial success with selling show/seedstock with a small herd, so we concentrated on what was popular, hoping that saying, " She's a daughter of Bando 598" or "he's got Everelda Entense all over, top and bottom" was going to help us sell.

You have to change with the times, now they are like a bad name. Your problem is trying to chase the show circuit and the fad of the moment, if you would have concentrated on quality cattle, you would be in the drivers seat for seed stock right now.

Sorry, I should have said we picked them to fit the individual animal and not because they were bought for umpteen bucks and $500 a straw! You've made me curious. Which non-popular sires did each one of these advisors recommend to you then?
KInd of funny about temperment. We used 6I6 on 2 cows a couple of years ago. Both had dandy bull calves, the calmest almost a PITA tame cow had the nuttiest wild calf we've ever had and the other cow that was alwasy a bit skittish raised a mellow lump that didn;t get excited about anything.vclavin":3nr9mi43 said:Sorry, I should have said we picked them to fit the individual animal and not because they were bought for umpteen bucks and $500 a straw! PS around here Rito 6I6 is not used much, however, he has really great muscling and temperament. Too bad the SC is negative. I only use him on females with high SC EPD's
