newborn with missing patches of hair

Had a newborn today that has missing patches of hair on his back and legs. What would have caused this? He does not appear to be premature. The patchy areas almost appeared to be scalely. This is only the cows third calf.

don't know, i once had a calf born with no hair & i can't recall what the vet told me or if it got hair after awhile. i would guess just a birth defect that may straighten out in time
