First, this is a great site with a lot of good information.
My brother and I have access to approx 120acres of lease land in the Robertson County Texas area and we would like to start out by purchasing from local ranchers, instead of sale barns, 3-5 year old bred cows a few at a time with cash so as not to have loans. Our plan would be to grow slowly and lease land as we grow. We are not looking at this as a replacement income but more as a supplement to our income and reinvest to expand our operations over the years debt free. We currently own tractors and all associated implements, to include hay equipment. We grew up around cattle and are basically getting back to our roots, I would appreciate any advice and you can provide to help us out in this venture. I am still researching as to the best cross I like the looks of the tiger stripes but my main criteria would be the most efficient cow for my area producing the above average calf, so I welcome advise from all.

Hard to beat a Tiger or Brangus cow in Texas if you want to mash the scales down.
Both are high dollar cattle and replacements will go even higher with rain. Bad timing to get back in with the low inventory in the state. I would look for good Hereford cow's as they are cheaper to buy (stupidity in action) and put the finest low weight Brangus or Char bull I could afford on them. Black Baldies always bring top dollar the Yellow baldies have been running right with them for the last few years.

Have your infrastructure in place prior to purchase. At the very least a place where you can pen them up and an alley with a head-gate always comes in handy.

For what you are looking to buy, be prepared to spend quite a few dollars as decent cows, bred, or as pairs or 3 in ones are a bit pricey compared to what they were a couple of years ago.

Baldy caves usually sell well. Caustic knows more about what does well in Texas than I do here in Va.

Well, i'm not in texas but i will agree with herefords and the best brangus or char bulls you can find.It's the same here about the yellow baldies running right with the black baldies.Also i don't know about down there but up here if someone has cows for sale on there own they seem to think that is worth about an extra 10 to 20 percent more than what they are bringing at the sale. Not that some of the cows at the salebarns are not as good because there not. but if you know what to look at and you can spend some time at the a few sales and pick out the better cows you might spend less and get as good of cows as paying more just because they are not at the sale.
