Hello all, just got our 2 registered Black Angus cow/calves pairs (both cows are 2nd calvers and both have heifer calves) yesterday. And had a few questions.

How much grain and what kind should these ladies get per day in addition to their mineral supplement and pasture forage?

How soon will a cow come into "Heat" after calving?

With our small herd would it be cheaper/more feasible to buy a bull, rent one, or just use A.I.?

Thanks in advance for all your help!!!!

Archer, If your Cattle are on adequate Pasture, you should not have to worry about Grain, unless you just want to keep them gentle.I'd put em on a GOOD Mineral, with Magnesium and here in our area, we're Copper defficient.Your Cattle depending on when they calved will cycle real soon, or already have.I would not be in a hurry to buy a Bull, you may have a neighbor that would loan you one or rent oneOr you could go the AI route. If you were my neighbor, I'd likely be glad to loan you one.

Crowder has given you good advice.

If pasture is good - forget the grain - just bucket them a tiny bit every now and then so they come at the call. Be sure to call every time you come to the pasture before you give them something.

Mineral never hurts - in fact is a good thing and cheap to boot.

You may feel like an idiot if they are right handy when you are calling - but it trains them. You'll feel like a stud when they get out - someday they will - and they come to you when you holler from 1/2 a mile away - and follow you home like a dog on a leash! 8)

Stick with Crowder on the breeding advice - forget buying a bull.

Have fun - stay well,

Bez

I have a bell for calling em up. I can ring that thing and they come a running. I agree if you can get the up ever so often it helps come time to work them. You would be surprized how far off they can hear that bell.
