We spent 8 days in upstate New York recently and throughly enjoyed ourselves. We stayed on Grindstone Island in my wife's family farm house that was well over a 100 years old. The only means of transportation was by boat, and it was sure cold some days making the 7 mile journey back and forth to town in my flats boat. Personally I was very impressed of how safe and secure I felt in town, even though the people never waved or said high everyone was nice. I'm sure other people CC but no one opened carried. I never once experienced the feeling of this is a bad or I need to keep an eye on that person.
Some of the folks on here are from places like that, and don't know how good they have it. I definitely can see how you feel no one really needs CC for self-defense. If I thought I could handle the winter up there I'd of been there yesterday.
Artesianspringsfarm's hooked us up with some real homemade maple syrup and it's the best.

I have vacationed up there a number of times. I agree100 % with your impressions.

People are people. Wherever, but for some reason they seem less threatening. I got to say, folks in the Rocky Mountains have the same nature.

Upstate and Central NY are really quite lovely. Lots of nice towns, villages and hamlets. Some really pretty areas, and good people. Lots of rural areas as well. Too many people think New York city/Manhattan when they hear the word 'New York'. Long Island used to be very much like upstate, but is now more like downstate and Hollywood LOL. One of the first ranches in this country was located in Montauk NY (end of LI).

I'm glad you had a good visit to the Empire state.

Always glad to hear when someone is enjoying their days. I have never been there, farthest north I have been was boomerang trip to Pennsylvania to a cattle sale years ago. Didn't have time to see anything other than what we passed by on the road. Have heard several folks say how pretty it was in some places in upstate NY. Met some folks the other evening from Buffalo NY at our farmers market, they were very friendly and interesting folks to talk with.
Years ago my mother tells about her and her parents taking a trip to NYC, some of their luggage was stolen. But then again they have also had things stolen from their truck while in Lexington KY years ago too.
People are people everywhere they are.

I have been to upstate new york....it is pretty....in the summer time....

it is far too brutal for me in the winter.....

there are good folks and evil folks wherever there are folks....

There are a lot of areas in America that don't require 5 locks on the door and three firearms under your pillow. Unfortunately, we are having to go further and further from society to reach those places. Glad you enjoyed your trip.

I have the great good luck to live in a stunningly beautiful area. But as the days get shorter and I get older, I do dread the winter. It's not so much the harshness (the last decade has seen some winters that are pretty warm and relatively low snow) as how long it lingers in the spring. Middle of last March we got 38" of snow in one swoop. And living on a hill we are more protected from the periodic floods the area gets, but it makes me dread plowing in winter. "Slip-slidin' away..."
But yes, it's a beautiful area and not at all NYC lol.
I'd take NYC over Long Island though. Horrible traffic but without the culture and perqs of the city.

Dun, I graduated from SUNY Binghamton and can tell you the winters in Binghamton were like being in the tropics compared to where we are. Here is a funny one. True Grit first came by our farm last winter, I think it was in February. When he tried to find my place a couple weeks ago he got lost, in part because it was so snowy in February that he didnt even think I lived on a paved road.

Went to a restaurant named "The Fountains" in Binghamton. Fancy and expensive. That was the only time I was there.

Understandable.

Back in the 1950's & 60's, it was a much different place. Dairy farms, horse farms, corn, pumpkin and many, many potato farms. At one point in time, LI was one of the top producers in the country, for Broccoli and potatoes.

I couldn't believe that there were deer on Long Island in the late 70's. I fished out of Montauk and Block island for a few years and saw quite a few deer in my travels.

Very good fishing off of Montauk!

it's not scary when your surrounded by only white people.

I lived in Fillmore and Rexville for 6 years. Truly enjoyed the scenery and land. Hated the commute to Rochester to make a living. 5-6 months of winter is just too long for me. I need to get back there for a visit though...melancholy just contemplating it.

Very few blacks in Manchester or Corbin Ky and I surly wouldn't want to be walking around there unarmed. There's a lot of old hippies in Upstate NY, but they posed no threat and just wanted to left alone.
