New to AI

Hey everyone. I have been using Gelbvieh Bulls over 76 RA/BA cows. We have really been pleased with the calves. We would like to add maternity and length to our calves. Problem is there is a big lack of what we are looking for in our area (Texas Panhandle). Our vet recommended AI. We have never implemented AI in our program, and really aren't sure where to start. Our vet does not AI, but a company 45 miles away does. Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks.

You can do a lot with AI mate different bulls to cows to express what they may need.
Takes some time and thought, but whoever is doing the work should be able to make suggestions.
Probably cost $4500 or so for 75 cows that's $60 per head. should cover drugs, cidr and semen maybe a little cheaper with that many. Should be able to eliminate a bill so some savings there.

For a few years, we had a friend of ours that lived a few miles away that AI'd for us. We would put in the CIDR's, give all shots and watch for when they would come in heat. Friend would either come out or we would take the cow to his farm when they would be ready to breed. We would order semen and he would store in his tank for us. We've now taken AI course and are doing all ourselves.

I find that an Ai cidr protocol cuts down on time and still has good conception rates.

MRR that's what the vet had recommended.ended. thanks everyone. I think we are going to try it with next year's Spring herds and go from there. Thanks for all the info/advice.
