Got about 80 calves yesterday morning at 10 am :D , but I was 100 miles away from the farm busy with school stuff so I didn't get to see the new arrivals this weekend :( . Nor did I get to see what the weights were or how much we got for them. Oh well, I'll let you knw this coming weekend, plus get pics on here too.

From what I heard via phone, we got some black angus, quite a few simmi's and simmi-crosses and some herfords, some charolias (not nearly as many as what we had from last year's herd), a few blondies (I think), and a real odd ball in there: from what I was told, it sounded like he's a shorthorn calf (has a red roan-colored hide).

Boy oh boy, I can't wait to see them... :D :D

Finally, after waiting for days to see those little guys, I finally got the chance to go out this morning and do some looking and some pic taking. :D There are a lot of brown-hided calves, mostly simmentalX, and also a few hereford and red angus too. And BLACK calves! I took a pic of that "roany" calf below, only he's not roan, he's more of a shorthorn cross or something to that effect, (correct me if I'm wrong when you see him). There's a few charolais, and a tarentaise (see pic below), and a couple of grey ones too (one's dark grey, the other is light) I wanted to get a pic of that lighter-grey calf but the little rascal kept putting the bale between me and him. When Dad had been needling, he split the herd of 82 into 42 in the back and 40 in the front. AND, another thing I noticed was that these ones are a heck of a lot calmer than the last herd, even though there's still a few wild ones in there.

It was cold out this morning (-23 C), and the calves are pretty frosty this morning, and I just about froze my camera-hand (it's hard to take pictures with thick cow-hide gloves). It's supposed to be warmer this afternoon (forecast of about -10 C), so I'll be out taking more pics, and try and be around as much as possible to get them a little more used to me (they're still a little flighty, but they'll settle down).

Okay, enough talk, and lets see some cattle...

here they are, these are some of the back ones...

And there's the "roan" calf--shorthornX, right?? (tell me if I'm wrong)

At the salt block--see the black ones in there? :D

At the bale...

DSCF0033.JPG

and here's this dark grey-white face I was talking about--it's kinda hard to see if he's grey or not, I know, but he's grey...

No! Don't go...

Front calves at the bale feeder...

Here's a tarentaise calf...

Calves in order from darkest to light!

Black calf!

One other thing. They all average out to be about 500 lbs; they came from Westlock (Triple J auction mart), and Dad bought them for $108.24/100lbs.

I'm on dial-up  , which makes uploading pics really slow, so I'll maybe get some more pics of these calves on Monday, if y'all want.

Anyway, tell me what you think of them...

Really glad to see the photos of your new guys, and it looks like they're settling in well and learning their way around. Whatever the temperature is there (I can't do Celsius...) it's darned cold. Hey, where are the cats?

I can't help but post some more pics of these new faces, as I found a few more really neat, odd-ball-type hide colourations in this herd. Seriously   !!

And there is a roan calf in this bunch (see second pic from the top in my previous post), and he's the one that's probably the shorthorn that I was thinkin' of, as well as another red calf with a few patches of roany-color too that I didn't get a pic of (another shorthorn, probably).

This morning the cats were too busy having breakfast to join me. But they joined me this afternoon.

And it's STILL freaking cold out!

Here's a better picture of that spotted calf--and what's the possible breeds that the one on the right has? (I know, this is a bad pic)

DSCF00101.JPG

Spider and "Norman" I think ollie gave me an idea of what name to call this spotty one, lol!

DSCF0013.JPG

And here's that light-grey calf that I mentioned earlier; cute, ain't he?

DSCF00141.JPG

One of the few charolais calves that came in this herd (there's only about a dozen out of the 82)

Juxtaposition!! Black angus and white angus ;-) (Ooops! I meant char)

Thanks.

I'm really liking this year's herd, the calves are really nice and calm and it seems like I can get closer to them than those crazy bunch of char that made up last year's bunch without causing a stampede or something.

All sorts colours this year too, which is another plus. It'll be interesting to see how they finish this year...

...and to see how many we lose :( . I'm hoping none are lost this year, but we'll see.

Your red and white spotted does'nt look like a shorthorn. Pinz
or Normande Simmi cross. JMO

The red and white spotted doesn't look pinz, unless you look at the white on the stomach, but then the white runs up too far on the side
