New sales record?

I'm curious how this Mexican beef is going to affect us in the US. Has to bring prices down or at least slow the climb to more steady. I'm happy with current prices, steady would be ok.

I Know that report is small and hard to read but I thought it laid things out pretty well. I know several people that are selling every calf at weaning and culling really hard during these high prices. At the same time they are too scared to buy replace cattle. Can't say I blame them when a 7 year old bred cow is bringing $2,300 plus. We culled really hard but made the decision to keep playing the game and bought back. Hopefully things hold out.

We seen bred heifers as high as $3575 yesterday. Pretty good heifers but not reputation cattle. Some AI bred but some not.
Im going fishing instead.
There is still money to be made. Longer term cattle like expensive bred heifers might not be the way to go. But there is always under valued cattle out there. LRP and/or forward contracting would not be a bad idea.
I calculated the price difference between the top selling 400 weights and the top selling 800 weight steers here last week. It was $640. That is certainly profitable.

You can come and play with my cows. Only -27 celcius this morning. Little fine snow and a breeze to go with it.
I'm a little envious of your temperature this morning. -40 here at the moment and the sky is just starting to lighten. I'm guessing it will drop another 3 or 4 degrees yet.

Someone has a lot more confidence in the future of cattle than i do. Think I'm gonna keep the few i have and sit this round out. Going fishing. Sit on the river bank with an unbaited hook so i won't be disturbed.
I sold some decent mrkt cows a couple weeks ago. 3 hd the take home check was over $4,100.
It's probably going to take all three of them to buy a good pair.
I'm not excited but I guess I'll keep playing.

This is when I'm glad we played the long game. We built a good herd years ago, when things were cheaper. We will ride the high prices with 10yr+ old inputs. It will either stay high and become the norm or it will come back down and we will buy again. Until then, we cash checks and wait.

It takes really big returns to make up for sitting out just a little while. Especially in these highs.

I agree its hard to make sitting out make sense. I will explain a little.
Because of health issues i sold half my herd last winter. Bought a few back but not enough. Im not going to buy back at these prices.
I normally buy 30 to 50 3wt #2 bull calves in the spring. Work them and graze them through the summer. 50 heavy 3 wts this year will cost 60 to 75 thousand.
Having knee and ankle problems again so not getting around as well either.
As i have said before I am in this for pleasure and if i make a profit i spend it back on the farm. If i stay out a year it won't change how i do anything.
Some of the older CT members can probably understand this.

I am going to think the same way. Cut some numbers. Maybe just enough to keep the grass trimmed. I can make time to enjoy the family/farm. Do the improvments that need to be done. Less time in the pasture.

I dont even work anymore. I dont know how you do it KT.....

I completely understand. I wasn't meaning you specifically.

Buying and selling and trading gets romanticized. No matter if it's real-estate, cattle, stocks, etc.
