Does anyone here use these anymore ? I have someone getting out of the hay business and wants to sell me a what appears to be good shape could use new tires and has a weld in one rail with the teeth on it... new teeth for $600.00 could use a good paint job has new u joints and cables. I told guy soon as he is done with hay I want it. I did a search on tractor house and there were some selling in the thousands I cant believe it. This model appears to be older but still works good. Why are there some of these that sell for thousands of dollars?

I really like mine. Picked it up at a sale a couple of years ago for 100 bucks. Had to repair the drive dogs on the wheels. The only 2 reasons I can think of that they would be that expensive is that it's either brand spanking new or Barnum was right

LOL... I guess I better buy it for sure. I grew up using them but now use a hydraulic 8 wheel rake to rake my hay

We have a 256, and it's been a solid rake for us. A lot of people in our area are switching to V Rakes, but I'd say the majority of people here are still using models like the 256. I think a lot of people have had them for so long, and they just keep on working, so they hold on to them. Another reason I think they are still popular around here is they can be pulled with tractors that don't have extra hydraulic hook ups in the back. That sounds like a real good deal on that rake. Those rakes will typically bring between $1,000-$3,000 at auctions around here depending on their condition and if they have the dolly wheels or not. V rakes sure can get the job done a whole lot faster though.

No the cub is to run the sickle mower. the 8n is for the 256 rake.and and a 430 jd is to pull a small square baler.i know a guy that has this exact setup and puts up about 2000 bales a year. i often think how fun it would be if i didn't have to be anymore sirius than this about putting up my hay.

If I get extremely bored one day... Doubtful... I may try that on 1 acre of hay lol

I used the mule because the front spindle broke on my raking tractor and we had to get the hay baled before the weather changed

I figured it was something of that nature...worst case scenario you could hook it to a truck if nothing else.

Could have, but the mule is more manueverable then the truckin our interestingly shaped hay fields. A firnd of mine says that any hay field with 7 corners or less is square. We don;t have anything even approaching sqaure by those standards

lol same here... great point on maneuverability

I rolled 108 rolls today following a N/H 256.
V-rake is broke down.
Will never be without a N/H 256 for backup.

Yep, The 256 has made its way to my yard needs new tires but they still roll and hold air I will worry with that next hay season
