This one (42555958) is a 5-25-04 heifer out of VPI Limited Edition J921 and a RF Postive Plus 73C daughter. Approximate wt is 850.

Alright, give me some strengths and weaknesses so I can decide what bull I want to AI them to in Dec. I have it narrowed down to a couple, just want to see if anyone else's picks are the same as mine.

i dont see 1 thing wrong with them.they are big nice straight backed and legged heifers.well grown for their age.you got some nice heifers there.scott

If I would have been at that sale I would have done my best to keep you from buying them.

That is of course if I could have afforded it. ;-)

REAL nice looking heifers.

Are the two bottom pics of the same heifer? really like her,I like all of them but then again they are the RIGHT color for me  JHH

no white mane???/

Actually the last 3 pics are of the same heifer and she does have a little bit of white mane, but it's only about an inch wide and 10 inches long. You can only see it in the 5th pic if you look real close.

The heifer in the first pic only has about a dozen white hairs on her back, if you want to call that a mane. I didn't see her momma, so I assume she got the lack of mane from her daddy, Limited Edition, who I don't believe has a mane either.

Its the new fad these days, maneless herefords. I think we'll break off and form a branch, like the black herefords did!!

Without looking all of them up, I'ld breed them all the 774

How about a 774 son?? Close enough? Seems old Frank Felton made it nearly impossible to get a 774 calf registered these days.

Yeah People seem to be wanting less white and more red before long herefords will be all red if people keep breeding the white off of them.

Question! If you have a hereford that has a white streak back by the tailhead can you still register it?I know on hampshire hogs some years ago they had some rules on that kind of thing.JHH

I fogot you're looking to register them. I really like his calves and we're keeping one back this year, but that's commercial.

Dun, we used 774 and have registered the calves, but I had to turn over the registration papers to Knoll Crest Farm , in Red House VA, so that the calves would be registered. The owners of 774, Knoll Crest Farm, Red House VA, Sky Acres Ranch, Vermont, and Gerber Polled Herefords, in Indiana, are the only breeders that can register 774 calves.

774 makes some of the best daughters out there today. He is VERY white in the front and is a very long and thick bull. He was the uglyest bull I have ever seen in my life. I have alsways been told, that the more ugly the bull, the better the calves. That was just something that was told to me by a present day Hereford breeder. 774 is truly and proven sire that has done a great job in siring great animals. Take care everybody.

I have considered 8020, but don't think I want to take the chance on horned offspring. I've seen some 8020 calves that are polled, and they look good, but I'd basically have a 50/50 chance at polled calves with my polled heifers correct?

I've definitely considered MC Ranger, but his CED concerns me a little for heifers. I guess I'm a conservative guy, and while I'm just getting started, I don't think I want to test my cows calving ability just yet. I will probably consider Ranger in the future after their first calf and after I have seen how they are going to handle what they are bred to now.

.

If the heifers are homozygous polled, you could breed them to an ankole-watusi and the calves would be polled. Their offspring may not be, but the first generation would be. Polled is dominant

I see. I would have to research some more to find out, but I believe that they would all be homozygous polled.

Tell me if I'm correct here:

My original 4 heifers are Wrangler 19D (scurred) granddaughters. The rest of their pedigree appears to be all polled. So, if I'm thinking correctly, since these heifers are 1/4 of a scurred bull, if I bred them to a polled bull, their offspring would still have a 1/8 chance of being scurred???

The same phenomenon would hold true then for my CS Boomer 29F daughter only her offspring would have a 1/4 chance of being scurred since she is a daughter of a scurred sire. Correct???

I know I didn't explain that right, but hopefully you get the picture.

I guess the odds would work out about right. Scurs aren;t near as easy to predict as horns.
If I remember correctly (a real first for me), scurs are sex linked. I think heterozygous bulls are scurred but a heifer has to be homozygous to have scurs.

That's interesting. Back to the original topic, another reason for my pick of sires is that Jim Reed seems to be my best choice of suppliers, for a couple of reasons. First off, I think he has got some great cattle and has made his program great by using a variety of genetics. Second, Jim has got to be one of the most sincere, knowledgeabe cattlemen I have ever talked to. He is open minded and polite, and I think those qualities are a lot of the reason his business does so well. That, and it is convenient and cheap for me to get semen from him. He brings it right to my work, and I don't have to pay shipping or make a special trip to get it.

He doesn't offer 8020 or I'd probably try him out.

Beautiful heifer  I have a question. If you have a heifer/cow that looks like this, but ends up with a freckled face, does that automatically tell you it is not a pure bred? Just wondering.
