Hey all.
First post here. Need some advice. Picke up my first ten Brangus Heifers on Monday. Unloaded them, kept them penned for a while to settle them down a bit then turned them out. There was already a heifer and a yearling bull on the property. When we turned them out I guess you could say they went exploring. Followed them for a while until they seemed to calm down and enjoy the greens from all the rain we are getting (Hondo Tx). Next day, my partner went to check on them and only nine came to the mule for cubes. He went to look for her and she was a lagging behind and limping on her left front leg. Was able to get a look at it and it seemed like she has a little swelling above the hoof. Not significant but you could tell. My thoughts are that they came from oat fields, sandy soil and feeders to a more rocky area. The group was pushing each other around a bit I guess to establish a pecking order. My thinking is she may have tweaked it a bit or picked up a thorn. She's eating fine but does favor it. Not sure if we should call the vet or just give it some time and see how she does. I know they are pretty resilient. Let me know what you guys think.

I would give it a little time. Unless it gets worse. If it's an injury it should gradually improve. If it is foot rot or an abscess, it will get worse pretty fast. Then you will need to treat it.

I would give it a day, 2 at the most. If it is footrot if left untreated it can become pretty dire in short order. We had one cow that I dragged my feet at treating at the infection got into the "joint capsule" whatever that is. We would treat her and she would get better for a week or so then get bad again. Each time it was worse then the time before.
Even if just for peace of mind I would think about getting her up and looking things over. Yes I'm paranoid about footrot!
