I didn't realize that cattle were into piercings too! Got home last night, went to feed the two weanling heifers and yearling steer "Freezer" we have at the house. One of the heifers looked like she had a leaf hanging from her lip from a distance which wasn't too surprising since they are stripping all the leaves off our cottonwood trees (the river runs along our property). When she got closer I realized that it wasn't a pretty leaf, it was a shiny fish-shaped fishing lure hanging from her upper lip!!! You have seen them the cute little fishes with three prong hook on its tail and one on it's belly - the tail one was hooked in her lip. She had figured out how to flip it out of the way to eat but I didn't want her to pull it out and swallow it she'd had it in her mouth a number of times. After some herding and fooling around I finally got her and her friends into the chute and ended up having to put a halter on her to tie down her head in the head catch. Luckily only 1 of the hooks was all the way through the lip, I cut it off with wire cutters, one other was part of the way in and the third was just poking her lower lip. I had to pull the second barb because there was more flesh than length of hook (ouch!). She figured out what I was doing as soon as I grabbed and clipped the first hook and she didn't move until I got the whole thing out.
We tend to have the strangest experiences and "accidents" in our herd, once again here is a new one.
