Having had mostly brangus cattle, I've been impressed by the performance of a couple of beefmaster cows that I have over the last couple of years. Always seem to hold up good, and wean off big calves.

This past Saturday I attended a Beefmaster sale, via internet real time. It was kind of weird not having bought cattle like that before. I had studied the dvd they sent me, looked at the catalog, but I still felt uncomfortable buying cattle without being there to look at them.

Well below are three head that I bought. I must say that the operation in Mississippi put on a first class auction, and they treat people well. Opinions???

I've never had any beefmasters, but they are some nice looking animals. Look calm, too. Kinda partial to the 18 mo heifer, myself. Congrats on the new family.

Hard to beat a beefmaster kinda like the perfect Tiger,
1/2 Brammer 1/4 Hereford and a 1/4 Shorthorn when they were developing the breed.

Good cattle Cypress that come with lots of options to market with different terminal bulls. Now boy you are getting sharp like a rat turd.

with out asking what you paid, did you feel they went cheaper, higher or average on the internet auction?

Ps. Nice looking girls

With any luck the cow will have a heifer calve. The heifers will be meeting my angus plus bull soon for a next spring cross.

Thanks for the compliment Caustic, I guess, if it was one ;-)

I don't mind you asking aplus.

The red heifer was $1300, the tan heifer $1100, and the bred cow $1100. I don't feel I paid any more than I would have had I been there. Maybe I should clarify - this was a real auction, but internet users could bid as well. Most of the cattle went to people there, but there were some bought by internet bidders. The prices are a little high compared to some of the local beefmasters offered, but they are of better quality. You can get a beefmaster heifer for around $800 to $900 locally, but they aren't registered (which we know means nothing), and they don't have the mass, depth and length of the stock that Windy Hills in Mississippi have. Most of their cattle went higher than these, but I hung around to the end and made a few good purchases, IMO.

ill tell you thisyou flatout got a great deal on them beefmasters.as a matter of fact you stole them.id bought them all day long at that price.all the breeders i talk to want $1750 to $2500 forbreds an pairs.open heifers are $800 an up.you got you some cattle there.they are well put togather.

You did good Cypress! That deep red heifer is really eye catching. Those prices are very reasonable. The bred heifer looks like her teats may be a little big, but that may be the picture. Still a great deal!

Actually that "real time" internet auction sounds like fun! Nearly as much fun as being there. Did they deliver, or did you go pick them up?

The auction was in Poplarville, Miss. Within an hour of the sale, they had worked out with me the delivery. They dropped the three off at the local stockyard in Baton Rouge for me, and I picked them up from there. Cost $110. I couldn't have driven the 3 hour one way drive and back for that cheap with fuel.

I'll be buying more from these people. If they took good care of someone buying only three head, that says a lot about them. They really provide good service, and they have developed stock over 19 years of breeding that are long and wide. Everyone is happy. Best way to be.

cypress, what do their petability epds look like?

The cow and light colored heifer's petability epd's are fine. Red is a little low on pet score. She may improve as she gets older. I've heard that range cubes can increase the pet score by 50%.

AHA! my subliminal beefmaster messages are working. eat your heart out Springerfarms! (just kidding)

Beefy,

How did you get that picture of Caustic petting one of his black baldies?????

After looking at it closer I think the calf is sucking his thumb.

I know Custic is not into petting but letting it suck his thumb????
