I have unsucessfully tried to straighten out my old carb on the ford 5000. Will any other one barrel carb work as long as the mounting bolts to the intake match up?

You'll need a replacement that's specifically designed for your tractor. They can be expensive, so it's worth trying to dignose the problem.

First, what is the old one doing? Is it leaking or what? You rebuilt it, I assume. Is your tractor running rough? What are the symptoms.

There are no kits available that I have been able to find either here or on the internet. The carb is running rough and floods. I took it apart and cleaned it by soaking it and spraying it with cleaner then made the gaskets and replaced them. It ran better but was still hard to get the tractor running right. I replaced the points and plugs and then rechecked them last night. It is flooding out to the point of gas coming out. Sounds like float maybe? I checked with yesterdays tractor. com and was told that this model is very hard to find carb's for. The old holley on there only has one # and I believe that is the patent #.

If it's flooding, then it's most likely your float or main jet that's acting up. Unfortunately, neither of those are available from NH. The postt '66 4000 repair kit (CKPN9590C) will work on your carb, but you have to get the 5000 main jet separately. As stated, it's no longer available.

The only thing I know to do is take the main jet out, clean the orifice and blow it out with compressed air. Hopefully, you just have some trash in there that's keeping it from closing completely. You may also want to run a small wire into the orifice to clean it as well. Do that carefully, though.

Also, check to see that your float doesn't have a leak. I don't know what those floats are made of, but I don't think they're cork. If it's plastic, it may be repairable.

Thanks for the tips. That's what my evening will consist of. I have looked high and low for a kit and they are seemingly non-existant. I'll try the things you said and also check the float. I have been told that if it has a hole in it solder will sometimes repair it if it's not plastic and I don't think it is. I was told just to not get too much. I'll do another cleaning and tinker some more.

The float valve is not stopping the gas flow. That can be caused by a couple of things. One, the needle valve itself may be damaged or maybe the seat the valve seals against. But more than likely its leaking because its got some trash in the valve.

The second reason it might be leaking is maybe the float is not floating (mentioned earlier). The float should be light as a feather (how's that for a measurement). Anyway, thrown it in some gas and it should float. If not, its bad.

Maybe one more reason the carb is overflowing. Maybe the float adjustment is out of whack. Remove the float bowl from the carb and turn whats left upside down. The float should come to rest pushing down on the float valve almost level with the base of the carb. If not the adjustment is to bend the tangs on the float until its at the right level AND pushing down on the float valve.

I don't mean to sound condescending but when you cleaned it by spraying did you really spray carb cleaner into all the orifices until it came clean out the other side? I'm not puttin' anyone down but the reason I ask is because i've seen fellers spray contact cleaner on the outside of the carb and say they "cleaned" it.

There's a place in Eagle Lake, Texas called Eagle Tractor that might have parts - lord knows the old man has everything you could possibly want or need. I'll see if I can find a phone number and PM you. I don't think he has a web site be he sure knows tractors.

Thanks Earl, I guess it just wanted me to spend some time with it. I retraced my steps last night and ended up taking it back apart, I did spray all the orfices and found the little screen going from the gas line to be stopped up. Long story short when reassembled it's running like a top. Thanks again.

No problem. Glad we could be of a little assistance.

Come to think of it I don't think I've ever heard of a gasoline powered 5000 but then I'm a long way from knowin' about tractor models and series designators outside of my own.

Really what made that tractor run was it heard me talkin' about buying a new one. I'm still thinking about it.
