I wanna start by saying I've been checking this forum out for a long time, but have just been looking around. So I decided to join this morning.
I'm in college and have about 20 cow/calf pairs of mostly Angus and Brangus type cattle with a 7 year old Angus bull. Well my dad has been row crop farming for almost 25 years, but has never had cattle or really been around cattle up until the last two years and now he has a little bit of interest in them. We had a good soybean crop this year and he said he wants to buy about 30 cows and see how it works out. So we want to have 50 cows between us. We will be in the commercial business. My cows are already an all black herd so I will probably get him to buy some Angus type cattle also to keep it the same with my cattle. We don't want to rock the world or anything, just want to have fun with them and maybe start building into something bigger when I get out of college in a couple of years.
So what I need advice on is what type of bull we need to use and whether or not we should have one or two bulls.
A little insight to what our weather situation is and the ideas I have thrown around:
I would like to go ahead and cull the current bull this year and start fresh. He's a good bull, but kind of has an attitude problem.
We want to have our calves in the Jan-March months.
We live in Mississippi.
I've thought about Hereford, Angus, Gelbvieh, and Charolais bulls and if we were to buy two bulls maybe going with two different breeds.
Well this is as far as we have gotten into it and I am now looking for advice. I'm not predjudice against any breed and open to pretty much anything right now.
