My son's heifer has crap caked on her butt, how do I get it off??
We rinsed her good last week and cleaned up her butt, didn't have any problems removing the crap then but now it is just caked on and I can't break it loose with out getting kicked.
I tried soaking and scrubbing for the longest time and didn't really get anywhere. I try pulling gently and she kicks.
We have 5 days until the fair, we need help!
Thanks!

5 days to the fair and you just noticed that she has crap caked up on her???

Water, soap, water, soap...curry comb...water, soap, water, soap...I am sure you get the idea. In the future I'd start a little earlier than 5 days before the fair... It's also a good Idea to look at the bedding material here and there.

A scotch comb will take 'em out also...you will need to go quick... The band-aid theory...Usually works best if preceeded by the long soak.

just my thoughts

I just knew someone would say that! I guess I should have explained myself a little better.
She is on pasture and of course has the green grass poops. The way her body frame is, every time she craps she swishes it all over her butt with her tail.
She is not bedded down in a barn, she is free to roam in the pasture.
It's not that we just now noticed, but since she is one of his oldest heifers we knew we didn't have much work to do with her other than bathe her.

Gertfan,

sorry I didn't mean to come off as crass. It will take some time but if you can get the crap wet enough and take it one dingle berry at a time a scotch comb will work wonders...crazy as it sounds a blower may loosen it up also without the kick hazzard...Once you get her clean you may want to rinse her once or twice a day...

again sorry for the smart mouth...after I read it I realized how... well you get the point.

Good luck

We have this shampoo called EQ Solutons we bought at our states beef expo. You can buy it on the internet as well. It took a few washings to get the manure completely out. Something in it breaks down the manure.

When they have the manure that gets cakey for some reason, I usually try to rinse it off everyday so it doesn't build up.

Just wash and scrub. Alot. There is another shampoo, called EZ All, that works wonders in situations such as that, but it is exspensive! You apply it on a dry cow through a fogger (http://www.valleyvet.com, you should be able to get one here, though I do not know about the EZ All) and let it sit, then just hose it off(you don't need to scrub your heifer). The crap will just come when you apply water. As I said before just spend time washing and scrubing the heifer and you'll be fine, but keep in mind the EZ All (Expensive!!!!!).

Finally last night we got her cleaned up, I scrubbed and scrubbed and scrubbed!!!!!!!!! My son held her tail while I scrubbed with a scrub brush and soap.
Looks like I will be doing the same thing today as she looks the same, damned green grass!

There is stuff called EZ All. Great stuff. Works great for problems like yours.
Here is a link for future reference.
