Just lost a big 8 week old bull calf to Necrotic enteritis has anyone else had this problem
 
Vet just said could be bad feed but had not started them on feed yet also said he has not seen it in like 10 yrs very uncommon
The calf was fine the day before then within 24 hrs he was gone
 
Is it like what some folks call "purple gut"? Usually clostridium type C&D. Have battled if after blizzards where calves hole up and don't nurse for 12+ hours then get a big slug of milk to set it off. Find the ones that are bloated and kicking their bellies. We administer spectinomycin (pig antibiotic - red syrup) and C&D antitoxin ASAP. Usually have saved them. Otherwise just find them bloated up and dead. Have to move fast when you find them.

We give our cows a cheap clostridial pre calving along with their scour vaccine. Incidence has dropped dramatically. Treat the bloaters that are kicking at their bellies with LA, meloxicam and mineral oil. They all live if you catch them soon enough.
