I would like to see him split some black gum, or knotty oak. But it sure works good on that wood.
I'd like to see anyone split me three or four cord for free.. Every winter... :cowboy:

My sons don't even do it for free  . It looks like a good system, but as said before it looks like some easy splitting wood to begin with. Like to see it on some tougher wood, fir filled with knots maybe.

Beats swinging a splitting maul or using wedges. I haven;t seen anything that would split like that since we quit burning alder in washington.

Some handy dandy on here should build one of these. Maybe in a couple of years I will.

I love using the maul and do a few cords a year... Maybe its me but umm whats up with the baby pieces of firewood. I like chunks so I dont have to keep adding every 5 minutes. I like the concept he has but I also like all 10 of my fingers to be connected to my body. HD pay for my fuel to come out there and feed me unlimited seafood and I will come split it :)

I get the feeling that video was made in a foreign country. No telling what he's splitting.

I can see me pulling a half split piece off that gizmo and getting my fingers pinched and squashed flat.
On the other hand, I can't think of a better use for a Honda car...

Good use for a Prius too - then it would be green and all enviro-friendly and all.

that's one of the best ideas for a splitter I've seen in ages.. I think I might make one.

ALL log splitters are dangerous, so are balers, and just about everything found on a farm...

Yeah, me too. That wood he's busting up I could split with one hand, there's plainly no resistance to splitting. I went to great effort one one time to split a piece of black gum just to see what was going on there. The maul would bounce off it like it was made of rubber, had to use wedges and a sledge hammer. The grain of the wood is in a sinusoidal wave. Doesn't burn good either. The only wood I cut for firewood is black cherry and oak and occasionally hickory and pecan when they get in the way. Busted up a bunch of red maple one time and sold it to a guy (it busted up real easy like in the video) and he said he didn't want any more of that, so I don't cut up maple for firewood anymore. Just oak and cherry and try to keep it like 1/4 cherry 3/4 oak per load. Got a new maul this year, a Fiskars made in Finland, has a composite handle, and it's way better than the hickory handle maul I've been using for the past 12 years.

I've been contemplating buying a new maul, wondering how good these fancy things are, how well they hold up to being overshot, etc
The stuff I used to split was pretty twisty grained and a maul would get stuck too easy. I settled on using wedges and an 8 lb sledge hammer. If I was off a bit I tended to bang the handle next to the head on the wedge. Didn;t take many of those till the handle broke where it had gotten all chipped to crap. My solution was multple layers of bailing wire wrapped around the handle for about 6 inches. Never broke another handle but I did have to replace the wire that would break after too many misses.

we have a fiberglass handle on ours and it's lasted well, we had a lot of problems with the glue not holding though, and the answer to that was grinding lots of steps in the inside of the head so the glue had something to hold to, and then to stuff every spot you could with a nail or something, it lasted over 10 years since we did that... and we're no better than you, we whack the handle on the wedge once in a while as well! The extra baling wire around it is a good idea I'll probably implement!
