My name is Benin I am a graphic Designer at the National Zoo in Washington, DC. We are trying to identify the breed of what we think is a cow form a photo taken in India. I say think because we don’t see an utter.

We need to determine the height, length and breed of this animal for an exhibit element.

Any ideas?

Hi,

Calling it a cow sounds right. She looks like a female for sure, but maybe it's a young female that hasn't calved and doesn't have a well developed udder. Plus she looks a little thin and that can make a difference too.

Could she be a Zebu?

Good luck with your project. :)

I see utterly no udder either. :) Poor picture and a poor looking beast as well. But if I were to hazard a guess and if my recollection is correct, I'd say a young, possibly underfed Sahiwal or a Sahiwal crossed with some other Zebu-type bovine. As I recall, Sahiwal is a dairy breed, so at some point I guess you'd expect to see significant udder development but probably never much of an overall beefiness look, IMHO.

Since she has a vulva I would assume she's female. That's about as far as I would go.

that animal is a female, could be a heifer, could be a cow in poor condition by American standards. She is definitely of the genus Bos and species indicus.

i wonder why they cut her tail off but more importantly why she has no hooves.

Those indians have too keep them in that shape to handle them.it would be funny to sneak over there a hit em with a little ivomec, and some groceries then stand back and watch the fun. caustic thinks south texas is rough on them its probably heaven compared to where they were :cboy:

After careful observation I would say that somebody found some extra parts on the shelf and put them together to create this , this, this...

If you go to the root directory there, or:

you get redirected to:

which is just some personal webspace.. The text there lists that the site owner works at the Smithsonian Institution's National Zoological Park, which jives with what he said.. Could be an elaborate ruse, but it would be pretty elaborate....

I'm just doing a little investigation, I guess...
