I was planning to sell this black baldie heifer in an upcoming replacement sale, but they only want lot sizes of 5 or 10. I don't have that many I'm willing to sell. She is 12 months old and about 825 pounds. The black gold preimum next to her is 17 months old and also about 825 pounds, but we are keeping her.

Since we raised this black baldie to this age, we are thinking we might as well breed her and see what kind of calf she throws. On the other hand, we started out thinking we wouldn't keep her. She will not be in the top of the herd, but with today's prices, she may be worth keeping for a few years.

We have not fed out these girls - they were pasture raised.

anyhoo - here's her pictures:

That "spot" on her shoulder is a leaf falling.

One more thing - she is identical in disposition to her mother - they define docility. Not puppy dog gentle - neither will let you touch them, but you can pen them alone and they still remind you of Deputy Dog. You can see them thinking slowly - "Okey dokey, if this is where you want me."

Here's the black gold premium (pure Brangus, not registered). We call her L. C. (Little calf) She started out little, but she made up for it. I'm thinking she got up in the bunk, stepped out and scrapped the inside of her hocks. It is scabbed up and healing nicely.

She is out of a black baldie cow and sired by a 1/2 angus bull. Her momma looks like a brangus hereford cross while the bull's other 1/2 (cow side) was also a cross bred. That cow had some ear, was chocolate brown in color, light colored underside, with some brindle stripes.

The 1/2 Angus bull was unpredictable in calves. Some small, some huge, some excellent confirmation and growth, some poor growers, That's why we sold him and went with a quality bull.

Hey Dusty B,

I like em both, but the baldy especially. Since you've kept em this long, why not breed them. Since you said the baldies moma was calm, and I'm assuming a good cow, you have an advantage: you already know a good bit about the potential of the heifer.

You could always sell them as bred heifers if you have to, but I'd keep em.

By the way, nice hay.

On the hay - no, not moldy on the sides. We bought all of our hay in May when we figured there would be a drought this summer and fall. Glad we did, too. Last year, the hay got moldy on the bottom, so this year, we put it up on pallets. It works very well and the cows don't waste hardly anything.

The bales are under a large pecan tree and the dark spots you see is actually sap. The cows love pecan leaves and they seem to enjoy the added flavor in the hay. ;-)

We never intended to sell L.C., but if I can't talk hubby into keeping the white face, I'll let everyone know. I'd hate to take her to the salebarn to be sold for processing, but that is what we raise them for.

We have her 1/2 sister, too. She is puppy dog gentle and docile, out of the same cow. When you scratch her head, she hangs it low and flops her ears out like a dog. She did well raising her first calf.

One good reason to watch the way you talk. Got more than one Minister on here too.

I think the general consencus (sp) on these boards is that most posters are men. I think a lot of people would be surprized at how many women are here and who they are.

The point is that it doesn;t matter the gender. It's the quality of the response and individual

Did nobody else catch that the 17 month old weighed the same as the 12 month old? If your selling one sell the brangus...

Several have sworn me to secrecy - but you are short by about 10 - 12 that I can think of off the top of my head.

Stay well,

Now that I looked at the hay - do you have a problem with the hay molding on the sides with them touching like that?

Everybody knows that hay never dries out after a rain when you stack it under a tree

The hay kind of looks like it's farther back instead of under the tree in the pic.

By the way Dusty, my cows love pecan leaves also. They are a natural pruning machine with all of our pecan trees.

Jake was right Dusty, both the same size but 5 months apart. You said that the brangus started off slow (hence L.C.), but that's a lot of difference
