I am no rookie at hunting. Our deer gun season runs for a week the monday after Thanksgiving. Blackpowder season runs for 4 days the last week of December. I went out this morning with plans to snag the "big" one that has been snitching out of the feeders.
I walked out toward the woods where the deer bed down, planning on waiting for him to head to the weat field to graze. It is still dark-so I can sneak in better. I got to the top of the hill at the edge of the woods and there are some of the heifers. I thought nothing of it. This is where the brain fart happens. They are mostly ex-show heifers and are all broke to lead and more than likely think I have something for them. I start down the pipeline to my stand...and so do the heifers! they manage to spook up 6 doe and the 14 point "old grey" we call him. I never got a shot off. But should have shot the heifers
I think that is the shortest hunting adventure ever.

note to self: lock heifers in barnyard night before planned hunting

I have had almost the same thing happen to me, but with the dog following me. I have to tie him up or he will follow me every time.

Sorry you didn't get old grey, but if you do next time you have to post pictures for us to see!

I have had the same sort of thing happen only with less than tame cattle. The area that I hunt mule deer in is full of range cattle in the fall. I have snuck up on a draw or canyon only to get too close to a bunch of cattle. They aren't use to seeing a human on foot so they stampede off scaring ever deer for a mile. One time I accidentally cornered a bull in a blind draw. His only way out was over me. Not a tree or fence for me to use within miles. For a few seconds I thought I might be buying Charlie a new bull, but we both managed to survive. Lesson to self, always avoid cattle when hunting.
