I drew a muzzleloader tag for bull elk this year. I'd like to get one of the new inline type muzzleloader to hunt with and I'm leaning towards a CVA. What''s everyones experience and recommendations? Colorado doesn't allow pellets or scopes.

I like the CVA guns. Caustic will be slobbering all over this thread and he is a expert on Muzzle loaders.

Meant to add, that I have a CVA optima magnum that will drive tacks. I shot a doe at 175 yrds dead center- I use a sabot here. I have a lot of confidence in the gun and enjoy shooting it.

I never tried the sabot deal, just patch and round ball. Except for elk. For that I used a 54 with a Lee R.E.A.L. bullet. The engrave at the loading with the rifleing, thus their name. Mine I cast from everyrthing from pure lead to linotupe. Linotupe was a bugger to load but they all shot very well. These were the older styled slow rifling rifles, ranged from 1:48 to 1:66.

I can't tell you which one to buy , but I can tell you to stay away from the T/C Pro Hunter. I traded mine off 2 years ago and it was the happiest day of my life.

They are a POS...........

Thanks for the info. From what I've read a lot of people claim the CVA's shoot the best. Then I know a few that swear by Thompson Center too.

Sabot's are not allowed in Colorado but Power Belts are.

I have a 54 caliber percussion with a 1 in 66 twist I shoot round balls with but I think a new inline would be less apt to misfire. I'd hate to call in the bull of my dreams and only have the cap go off scaring him off. Plus I like the looks of the power belts.

:D Thanks for your opinion and info!

I have 2 cva wolf magnums with camo and nickel or stainless barrel. It is short but I have killed deer over 140 yds away with a hornady xtp 44-240 bullet and sabot on 105 grains of pyrodex. I am not deemed as an expert like some but I can sure tell you what works and has put 7 deer and 3 bobcats mounts in the house. :2cents:

edit putting in pic - I keep that one to use the other is in a box in a safe I loved the gun so much I bought 2 of same thing.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I'm a little surprised no one recommended TC.

I am not slobbering to set the record straight.

My first choice would be my Knight inline for elk.

I shoot a couple of CVA Wolf's get some Blackhorn 209 powder and you can find a load that will drive tacks
shot after shot. Your most accurate load will most likely be in 90 to 100 grain volume range.

Well I have a Pro hunter, and a Encore made by TC. Both are 50cal. and I've had good luck with both. 3waycross shoots and hunts with a muzzleloader more than I do. My CVA had a horrible trigger pull and I could never get it mastered. The TC's have a good trigger IMO. And good luck on your hunt Ned.

You didn't mention what bullet your Wolf's like?
You're right about less powder I tried 3 50 gr pellets and my Wolf wouldn't group at all so dropped down to 2 pellets and it's ok but no tack driver. I've tried several bullets.
Have any of you tried the pointed lead bullets I think the brand was Dead On or Dead Center? They look like a boattail bullet but they're lead and they use the plastic cup like a sabot. My gun shot those decent but I might try that powder CB mentioned.

Ned not to hijack your thead but we went to a wedding up at the Pines Ranch today and your valley shore does look purty.

I love that valley on a good year the grass is at the top of the fence posts and 6 months later the snow is at the top of the fenceposts.

I will need to buy some hay so let me know what it's going for down there this year.

Those pellets are only good for the people making them.
Blackhorn is non corrosive as well doesn't draw moisture.
I always start a new muzzleloader up at 70 grains and work up. I have found very few
over the years shoot better over 90 grains in 50 cal. Each smokepole has a favorite load.
This is about making one shot count not trying to turn it into a 204 Ruger which is impossible.
You can buy into all the hype a smokepole is a 100 yard rifle not a 30-06.
Ballistically they won't compete with a 30-30

I shoot 245 grain Powerbelt Bullets

Or sabots with a 44 cal 240 grain Hornady bullet.

You couldn't give me a pellet.
If that is the case I would use my TC Hawken and a Maxi Ball.
I would duplex the charge with 5 grains of 3 F black followed by 75 grains of Blackhorn.
