I feed rolls in the same general area each winter, then scrape it and spread the manure on the fields come spring. Been looking for some type of summer annual or small grain to cover these areas with in the summer to get some good out of them instead of the usual spiny pigweed fall stockpile. Can't seed the areas until mid to late April. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Whatever you plant, it would probably be best to work the ground prior to seeding. The area will have high compaction and you probably won't get as good of a stand broadcasting or no-tilling it in.

I have done this in the past where we feed hay and the lot where we feed our calves after weaning. It is about a 3 acre patch, and I planted Sudex for summer grazing. It really does a good job of taking the stress off of the summer grazing of the cool season grasses.
